According to the California Department of Finance, in 2025 the state lost 229,000 residents to other states. This was the sixth straight year that California led the list for losing residents among the nation\u2019s 50 states. International immigration and births offset some of those departures. Some Californians moved to Texas due to the once Golden State\u2019s leftist politics and\/or extremely high cost of living. Others followed their employer. For the first time, America\u2019s largest companies are headquartered in Texas. The Economist recently proclaimed<\/em> the Lone Star State is \u201cAmerica Inc.\u2019s new centre of gravity.\u201d<\/p>\n

Those who follow social media frequently see posts about life after California. These sites are filled with former Californians sharing their joyful experiences about living in a red state and offering advice to those planning to leave. Yet sometimes people need to move back<\/em><\/strong> to California. For example, take this post:<\/p>\n

My husband received a promotion with a large salary increase, but we need to relocate from Texas to California. We have two young children and a 3,000-square-foot home on an acre with a pool. Any suggestions as to where in Los Angeles to move to?<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

Here are some of the responses:<\/p>\n

Angeleno Mom:<\/em><\/strong> It depends on whether you want to fight traffic or fight the homeless.<\/p>\n

Sunset Blvd Mom:<\/em><\/strong> We left Texas for LA three years ago and couldn\u2019t be happier. We love watching Pacific sunsets while sitting in traffic.<\/p>\n

Pablo Poppa:<\/em><\/strong> Lots of choices if you speak Spanish, Cambodian, Vietnamese, Arabic, Mandarin, Cantonese, or Tagalog. If you only speak English, there are only a few places to live in.<\/p>\n

Hollywood & Whine:<\/em><\/strong> Move near a main thoroughfare to avoid delays due to frequent freeway chases.<\/p>\n

Loving LA:<\/em><\/strong> At first, finding a house was tough, but once my husband and I agreed that the unhoused had the right to live in tents on public sidewalks, we found a great starter home for under $3 million. We even became friends with the unhoused drug addict who showers on our front lawn when we water the garden.<\/p>\n

Beach Boy:<\/em><\/strong> My wife, three kids, and two dogs live near downtown. We split the house into two units because we could no longer afford the utilities. IM me if you want info on a two-bed, one-bath unit that is available at $4,500 per month. Parolees get $100 off their rent.<\/p>

Swim Gal:<\/em><\/strong> If you want a pool without the expense, consider moving to an older neighborhood, as they have frequent water main breaks.<\/p>\n

Gun Pop:<\/em><\/strong> Join a local gun club, as they will share California\u2019s self-defense laws. Short version: only after you\u2019ve been shot several times and are profusely bleeding can you shoot the thug who was probably out on parole.<\/p>\n

JR:<\/em> <\/strong>I was born and raised in a small suburb outside of Dallas but got tired of friendly people, large homes, cheap gas, low grocery prices, little crime, and a booming economy. After getting my gender studies degree, I moved to Los Angeles and couldn\u2019t be happier.<\/p>\n

Alpha Al:<\/em><\/strong> I like living in a neighborhood with a lot of diversity. Every sidewalk tent has someone from a different country.<\/p>\n

Cali Lover:<\/em><\/strong> Welcome to California!!! I love living here!!! I know California gets a bad rap because we keep electing mentally unstable people, but if you can forget the homeless, drug addicts, trash, gangs, crime, traffic congestion, and high cost of everything, Los Angeles is a really great place.<\/p>\n

Wilma on Wilshire:<\/em><\/strong> My mother is in hospice, so her charming 1952 bungalow will soon be available for lease. Three bedrooms, one bathroom, and an amazing view of her neighbor\u2019s backyard. Fully upgraded (1981), rent will be $5,900 a month. IM if you want to see the house, but we can\u2019t show you one of the bedrooms since she is still in it.<\/p>\n

Johnny Be Hood:<\/em><\/strong> Make sure you have a reliable realtor to show you around. When we first moved to California from Texas, we told the realtor we wanted an apartment that was central to everything in a gated community. We ended up renting a house in south central with gated doors and windows. On the positive side, my kids can speak fluent Spanish.<\/p>\n

Valley Girl:<\/em><\/strong> Don\u2019t let the Debby Downers discourage you. Los Angeles is a fantastic place to live if you\u2019re a trans communist who hates white people, are on government assistance, and celebrate Ramadan rather than Easter. By the way, my husband and I are moving to Texas. Please IM info on your house before you put it up for sale.<\/p>\n
