The joke was simple.<\/p>\n

Two retired NBA players — talented, intimidating, towering athletes — decided they wanted to come out of retirement (wink, wink) and join the WNBA.<\/p>

Enes Kanter Freedom and Royce White made the ludicrous announcement that they now \u201cidentify as women,\u201d a decision they say they arrived at over the summer. And, in this topsy-turvy world of biologic deniers, that would apparently make two retired NBA players eligible to apply for a spot on the WNBA roster.<\/p>\n

This wasn’t merely a case of what is hanging low or high in sportswear. It was something far more combustible, and harder to laugh off: a legal and cultural question with the potential to put the WNBA on the defensive.<\/p>\n

Do two retired NBA players — with all that formidable athletic prowess — qualify for admission to the WNBA under the league’s own guidelines?<\/p>\n

Freedom and White had achieved precisely what they wanted. The joke had gone far enough to force the WNBA to lawyer up — and then huddle in a corporate conference room with its\u00a0\u201cAnti-Hate Task Force\u201d\u00a0(yes, that really is the name).<\/p>\n

The joke had officially left the locker room and entered the boardroom.<\/p>\n

What emerged was an \u201cofficial statement\u201d that conspicuously avoided the one question hanging over the entire spectacle:\u00a0eligibility.<\/p>\n

Instead, the WNBA declared that there are\u00a0\u201cno current transgender-player eligibility issues in the league.\u201d<\/p>\n

Well, could there be one now?<\/p>\n

Freedom and White aren’t exactly going away. And if these two former NBA athletes aren’t eligible to play in the WNBA, the obvious question follows: Why not?<\/p>\n

What rule says so? What standard determines eligibility? And can the league articulate that standard — (of course) without a shred of common sense — and retreating behind corporate-speak?<\/p>

Freedom, meanwhile, proved particularly gifted at turning provocation into publicity.<\/p>\n

He had been scheduled to appear on CNN and, apparently committed to the performance, having prepared to discuss the league’s\u00a0collision course with its policies\u00a0regarding gender and sex and the moral abyss of ignoring biologic reality in favor of group-think.<\/p>\n

The wig did not go to waste.<\/p>\n

When CNN canceled the interview, Freedom took to social media and delivered another perfectly calibrated publicity stunt. He accused the network of refusing to hear the\u00a0\u201cvoice of a Black woman.\u201d<\/p>\n

After all, Freedom is Black. And he now identifies as a woman.<\/p>\n

And suddenly the wig wasn’t merely a costume. It was a prop in a larger argument — Freedom’s satirical attempt to expose what he sees as the media’s pathological tendency to view controversy through a racial lens and woke sensitivities.<\/p>\n

The WNBA’s anti-hate task force issued another statement — taking the offense — and condemning what it called\u00a0\u201cbad-faith efforts\u201d\u00a0by the NBA players to manufacture a narrative about transgender athletes competing in the WNBA.<\/p>\n

But beneath all the polished language was the sentence that really mattered: The WNBA said there are \u201cno current transgender-player eligibility issues\u201d in the league.<\/p>\n

Well, that’s interesting. Could there be one now?<\/p>\n

Because Freedom and White aren’t exactly going away.<\/p>\n

Neither is the lack of clarification in the rulebook. As of 2026, the WNBA\u2019s collective bargaining agreement says that \u201conly players who are women are eligible to play in the WNBA.\u201d But here’s the catch: the 409-page agreement never defines what, exactly, qualifies someone as a \u201cwoman.\u201d<\/p>\n

Dig deep enough, and the closest thing you\u2019ll find is the league\u2019s promotional description of its players as \u201cthe best women\u2019s basketball players in the world.\u201d<\/p>
