As my late father used to say, Fidel sold the biggest lie of the 20th century.\u00a0 My father should know because he was the same age, same generation, and knew that it was a lie of titanic proportions.\u00a0 My father, and my two uncles, remember a different Cuba, an imperfect place, but where no one built a raft to leave the country.\u00a0 My late mother used to say that it was a happy place full of immigrants who fled Spain and other places to find a better life.\u00a0 She was the daughter of Asturians who moved to Cuba in the 1920s.<\/p>\n

Havana has been gearing up for the centenary of Fidel Castro\u2019s birth on August 13, 2026.<\/p>\n

Fidel Castro died in 2016 after handing power over to his brother Ra\u00fal in 2006.<\/p>\n

Communists the world over claim him as one of their own, and international visitors are being hosted by the dictatorship to celebrate this anniversary. In 2006, Forbes magazine reported that Fidel Castro\u2019s net worth was $900 million (\u20ac780 million). One of his bodyguards, Juan Reinaldo S\u00e1nchez, who defected, wrote a tell-all book, The Double Life of Fidel Castro: My 17 Years as Personal Bodyguard to El Lider Maximo, detailing Fidel\u2019s 29 luxury homes, four yachts and private island (Cayo Piedra), not to mention other luxuries. This in a country where 89 per cent of the population lives in extreme poverty.<\/p>\n

This was not always the case. Prior to the 1959 revolution that ushered the Castro brothers into absolute power for the next 67 years and counting, Cuba had a sizeable middle class and strong labour unions that protected Cuban workers\u2019 rights. Even under the Batista dictatorship, an independent judiciary survived, and Cuban lawyers represented their clients, not the dictatorship.<\/p>

All of this ended in the months after 1959 and has yet to return. This did not result in the working class taking power, but in a new class of elites seizing and hanging onto power. It is the Castro family, military elites and their inner circle who sit on cash reserves of $18 billion (\u20ac15.6 billion), living lives of opulent wealth in Cuba, Europe and the United States, while millions go hungry in Cuba and die of easily treatable diseases.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Yes, elites who now live in the homes that the revolution \u201cnationalized,\u201d which were literally stolen from Cubans who built them or paid for them, people who saw the revolution take their property to benefit the ruling class.\u00a0 My father\u2019s uncle had two homes in Havana.\u00a0 They \u201cnationalized\u201d them and Aunt Clara never saw a dime after he died.\u00a0 (Memo to New York City:\u00a0 This is how they do it.)<\/p>\n

So my father was right that this was the lie of the century.\u00a0 It was a lie bought by leftists all over the world who hate the U.S. more than they love the Cuban people who are paying the consequences.\u00a0 It was also a lie bought by people who got their dose of Cuban history by watching Godfather 2.\u00a0 Good movie about a mythical place where revolutionaries were suicidal bombers and Americans ran to their boats to escape.\u00a0 Sorry, but my parents were there and that nonsense did not happen.<\/p>\n

So there is nothing to say about Fidel at 100.\u00a0 I just hope that there is a lot of global warming going down there where he is paying for everything he did up here.<\/p>
