Recently, on TalkTV, she went on a racist rant, condemning British white people as \u201cthe most evil people in history,\u201d due to their colonization around the world and participation in the slave trade.<\/p>\n

Jamil has spent much time portraying characters she is not, doing so adequately enough to move her career forward. However, performing as a world history professor would be a career-ending experience. Ranting without a researched script, she clearly demonstrated during her appearance a need to only tell one side of history.<\/p>\n

Unfortunately, as Jamil and other U.S. activists clamor for reparations to be paid to today\u2019s descendants of slave trade victims, they ignore a key reason why black slavery prospered.<\/p>\n

For the most part, European slave traders had no need to penetrate deep into the African continent to capture their slave \u201ccargo.\u201d A \u201cdelivery\u201d service was available by which the slaves Europeans bought were brought to various African port cities for sale. It was this delivery service\u2014i.e., those who captured slaves from within the African continent and transported them to the port cities\u2014that really was the most critical part of the entire slave trade.<\/p>\n

Providing this delivery service were the victors of warring African tribes who had taken battlefield prisoners. Initially enslaved by their captors for their own labor needs, victors learned a greater value was to be had selling them to European slave traders. Thus, but for black tribal slave traders, slavery would never have exploded as it did.<\/p>\n

The Transatlantic Slave Trade began around 1500, reaching its peak in the 1780s. It was the white people Jamil accused of being evil\u2014the Brits\u2014who eventually led the way among Western nations to outlaw slavery, terminating it with their one-time colonies in 1807.<\/p>\n

And, it was the following year that the U.S. banned slave importation into America. In 1833, Great Britain followed up with the Slavery Abolition Act to abolish the institution in most of its colonies, freeing more than 800,000 enslaved Africans. In 1865, the 13th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution formally abolished slavery.<\/p>\n

It is interesting to see how sometimes the loudest racial activists condemning the West\u2019s slave trade participation and demanding accountability receive an unexpected wake-up call.<\/p>\n

Among those always eager to criticize America has been Sunny Hostin\u2014a panelist on the television show \u201cThe View.\u201d Suffice it to say the program lacks 360-degree coverage on practically any issue, regularly criticizing the traditional values that have made our country great.<\/p>

Hostin is biracial\u2014the daughter of a Puerto Rican mother and black father. When her DNA was analyzed, however, she learned she was only 7% indigenous Puerto Rican. She was shocked to discover she was largely of Spanish ancestry and her fourth great grandfather was a merchant \u201cwho was likely involved in the slave trade\u201d in 1800s Spain and \u201cowned at least one human being.\u201d<\/p>\n

Apparently experiencing a eureka moment about our forefathers, including hers specifically, owning slaves, Hostin acknowledged, \u201cI guess it\u2019s a fact of life that this is how some people made their living, on the backs of others.\u201d Hostin and other reparation activists also probably fail to grasp the fact that, while most of the world has now banned slavery, one of the regions where it still remains active is in the land of her father\u2014Africa.<\/p>\n

There is no doubt slavery was and is a horrible institution. But it is also an institution that can be traced back in time to reveal an impact upon nearly every race and ethnicity throughout history. For example, the Mali Empire had the highest slave rate (1 in 3) while ancient Rome claimed a staggering 160 million slaves. It is difficult to name a single country that escaped slavery unscathed.<\/p>\n

In fact, the term \u201cslave\u201d is derived from \u201cSlavs\u201d during an era when they were the slaves of choice. What group of people fell victim to slavery at any given time largely was a matter of conquest. It was embraced by many early societies as a way to achieve economic advancement. An historical review of slavery also shows that the unequivocal leader in the sheer volume of people enslaved and sold was the Arab world\u2014with five Islamic empires ranking within the top ten.<\/p>\n

While the black race is seemingly singled out today as the only one to have been burdened with the yoke of slavery, no focus is directed at the fact that what America\u2019s slaves endured was largely a result of hostility by black African traders who had defeated them on the battlefield. And, ironically, descendants of those slaves here in America today are beneficiaries of something descendants of African slave traders are not. The quality of American life for blacks is far superior to what slave trader descendants in Africa enjoy. Yet, in addressing the suffering of all races subjected to slavery, for reparation activists, they promote a concept of LIFO (last in, first out) when it comes to compensation.<\/p>\n

An uncomfortable truth for compensation activists is that the slave trade existed in Africa long before the colonies and, thus, any American (or British) involvement. And, while it was abolished long ago in America, it still remains in Africa.<\/p>\n

Neither Jamil nor Hostin have an appreciation for world history and the evolution of the world\u2019s societies. As indicated, going back in history thousands of years\u2014particularly as agrarian societies emerged\u2014reveals that all races were victimized. Like Hostin admitted in her eureka moment, \u201cit\u2019s a fact of life that this is how some people made their living, on the backs of others.\u201d It was an institution that evolved as the nomadic life disappeared, necessitating slave labor for various societies that would make cultural advances benefitting all mankind.<\/p>\n

In 1897, the editor of the New York Sun newspaper a letter he wrote to an eight-year-old girl named Virginia who had written to him about whether Santa existed. His response became one of the most famous editorials written, bearing the title, \u201cYes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus.\u201d<\/p>\n

It was appropriate that the editor\u2019s response allowed Virginia to hold on to her belief in the Santa myth for several more years. However, those sharing the naivete of Jamil and Hostin\u2014clinging to the mythical belief slavery is an evil of the white man in which only minorities suffered\u2014must be dispossessed of that illusion. As terrible as the institution of slavery was and remains for all its victims, it has contributed to mankind\u2019s advancment\u2014albeit \u201don the backs of others\u201d of all<\/strong><\/em> races.<\/p>
