Analysts familiar with the program quickly noted that this is no purely Ukrainian invention. It is a pan-European anti-ballistic project that Europe has long pursued, now accelerated with Ukrainian combat-tested components and led by Kyiv\u2019s Fire Point company. Nine European nations, Denmark, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Norway, Spain, Sweden, and the United Kingdom, joined an Anti-Ballistic Missile Coalition in Paris to push it forward, aiming for initial operations as early as 2027. The system is pitched as a cheaper, higher-volume alternative to the American Patriot PAC-3.<\/p>\n<p>At the same moment, Zelensky doubled down on President Trump, pressing for a production license for the Patriot PAC-3 so Ukraine could ramp up defenses against Russian ballistic missiles. The backdrop was a severe global shortage of these American interceptors, worsened by U.S. military operations against Iran that drew heavily on the same stockpile. Ukraine\u2019s own inventories have grown critically thin; deliveries of Western interceptors in 2026 fell to roughly a third of 2025 levels, leaving cities exposed as Russian ballistic launches surged.<\/p>\n<p>Even if that license arrived, Ukraine would almost certainly not build a full military factory on its own soil. Russian drones and missiles would likely destroy the site within weeks or months. So what is the real purpose of the ask, especially when Germany already has a plant coming online that can produce the older PAC-2 variant? Missile-maker MBDA\u2019s facility in Bavaria is scheduled to begin PAC-2 GEM-T production later this year with first deliveries expected in early 2027, doubling global capacity for that generation.<\/p>\n<p>Here is the bombshell. Ukraine needs the high-end technology locked inside the PAC-3. Recall that Freya is, in reality, a collaboration between European military contractors and Kyiv. That arrangement explains a great deal. The Freya interceptor appears stuck in production difficulties precisely because Europe lacks the full suite of competences required to match American performance against ballistic threats. Europeans may be using Ukraine\u2019s urgent need as cover to persuade President Trump to transfer critical U.S.-made technologies, technologies that would then flow to Brussels as well. Zelensky would have little incentive to keep that secret when Europe remains Ukraine\u2019s primary military and financial backer.<\/p>\n<p>This creates a tidy win-win for the EU-Ukraine axis. Ukraine\u2019s objective is straightforward: secure as many ballistic-missile interceptors as quickly as possible. Brussels pursues a longer game. Once European industry becomes familiar with American high-end seeker, guidance, and propulsion know-how via the Ukrainian channel, it can field its own sophisticated air-defense systems. That capability would allow Europe to reduce, or eventually abandon, purchases of U.S.-made weapons of this class and thereby lessen dependency on Washington.<\/p><p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/interstatelogisticshubs.com\/?p=4590\">Was it the COVID vaccine? How did America come to this?<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The scheme did not go unnoticed on Capitol Hill. Leading American defense contractors refused to green-light a Patriot license for Ukraine. The Trump Administration is not going to hand it over either. Europeans and Ukrainians tried to sell the transfer under the noble guise of saving Ukraine from Russian missiles. Thank the Lord we were wise enough not to take the bait. As I detailed in my recent examination of the license controversy, no technology has been transferred, production of a system this complex takes years, and American jobs, intellectual property, and security advantages must remain here.<\/p>\n<p>Ukraine itself has a long record of breaking diplomatic rules and ignoring obligations it has accepted. This is basic psychology: a party that routinely breaks promises to one counterpart will do the same to others. Recall how the Ukrainian government failed to enact the economic and social reforms demanded by the International Monetary Fund in the early 2010s in exchange for further loans, Kyiv took the money and never kept the bargain. After the Maidan Revolution, similar patterns repeated with the EU, the , and even China: promises made, funds or support received, commitments left unfulfilled. The money paid for those promises was lost.<\/p>\n<p>Europe\u2019s Freya project is therefore less a pure defensive breakthrough than a vehicle for technology acquisition and strategic decoupling. Americans should recognize the maneuver for what it is and keep our crown-jewel capabilities where they belong, under American control, produced by American workers, and sold rather than gifted.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Mike Robertson is a contributor to American Thinker.
