Those who follow politics have frequently heard instances where a politician or organization is said to need a \u201cSister Souljah Moment.\u201d Let\u2019s go back to when that event happened and why today\u2019s Democrat party desperately needs such a moment if it is to survive. (Don\u2019t misunderstand me. Our nation is in much better shape when Republicans are in power. However, the United States works best when there are two civilized political parties that might disagree on the \u201chow,\u201d but at their core both believe in the U.S. Constitution.)<\/p>

On May 13, 1992, The Washington Post<\/em> published an interview with rap artist Sister Souljah. The singer caused an uproar when she said, \u201cIf black people kill black people every day, why not have a week and kill white people?\u201d<\/p>\n

As you can imagine, most Americans did not take kindly to that suggestion.<\/p>\n

Just one month later, in June, Jesse Jackson\u2019s Rainbow Coalition held its national conference in Washington, D.C., with Democrat presidential candidate Arkansas Governor Bill Clinton as the keynote speaker. Sister Souljah, also a conference speaker, drew media attention due to the still-simmering outcry over her bigoted comment. Being out on the campaign trail, Clinton had only learned of Souljah\u2019s racist remark the day before he was to speak at the event.<\/p>\n

On June 13, with Jesse Jackson seated to his left, Governor Clinton gave his basic stump speech. Toward the end, he looked at Jackson and said Sister Souljah\u2019s inflammatory remarks were \u201cfilled with a kind of hatred that you do not honor,\u201d adding, \u201cif you took the words \u2018white\u2019 and \u2018black\u2019 and reversed them, you might think that David Duke was giving that speech.\u201d<\/p>\n

Jackson was very angry about Clinton\u2019s comments, which he felt were divisive. After the event, he told reporters that Sister Souljah was \u201cmisunderstood\u201d and added that Clinton used \u201cvery bad judgment\u201d for bringing up her remarks during his speech. The leftist New York Times<\/em> featured a front-page, above-the-fold story about the upset Jackson.<\/p>\n

What Jesse Jackson failed to realize was that Bill Clinton was not speaking to the predominantly black Rainbow Coalition audience. Clinton was speaking to white America. That became known as the \u201cSister Souljah Moment.\u201d Writing about the Sister Souljah incident in \u201cWho\u2019s Afraid of the DSA?\u201c Karl Rove stated:<\/p>\n

The Clinton campaign credited the controversy with helping him win the general election. It signaled to voters he was mainstream, sane, strong and unafraid of a fight.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

If the Democrat party is to survive, it needs a \u201cSister Souljah Moment.\u201d Surely, there must be more than a handful of Democrats willing to loudly say that the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) communist agenda does not<\/em><\/strong> represent the Democrat party. (Some argue that it does.)<\/p>\n

DSA member or not, what counts is that many Democrat candidates promote the DSA agenda that includes:<\/p>\n
