One of the reasons I\u2019ve become a conservative is because conservatives, generally speaking, have a healthier appreciation for history than the left. We believe institutions matter. We understand tradition has value. We don\u2019t assume every generation is smarter than the one that came before it.<\/p>

But every philosophy has a blind spot, and for conservatives, that blind spot is nostalgia. Somewhere along the way, parts of the conservative movement stopped defending America\u2019s principles and started defending an imaginary version of America\u2019s past. Those are two very different things.<\/p>\n

As a Black conservative, I occasionally find myself in an awkward position. Progressives assume I spend my days apologizing for America\u2019s history. Some conservatives assume I should pretend America\u2019s rough edges were merely cosmetic. Neither assumption is true.<\/p>\n

I don\u2019t need America to have been perfect to believe she\u2019s exceptional, and that\u2019s actually the point.<\/p>\n

The Left has turned history into a prosecutor. Every chapter is another exhibit for the case against America. Every flaw is proof the entire experiment was fraudulent. If you listened long enough, you\u2019d think the United States contributed nothing to civilization except oppression.<\/p>\n

That\u2019s nonsense, but here\u2019s the part conservatives sometimes miss: Responding with an equally sanitized version of history isn\u2019t an answer. It\u2019s just the mirror image of the same mistake. History isn\u2019t a campaign commercial.<\/p>\n

America produced the Declaration of Independence. It also tolerated slavery. It gave the world unprecedented constitutional liberty while millions of its own citizens were denied its full promise. Those truths are not mutually exclusive. Mature societies can hold both ideas in their heads without short-circuiting.<\/p>\n

Unfortunately, social media has convinced us every historical conversation must end with someone screaming, \u201cSee! I told you!\u201d Nuance has become the first casualty of the culture war. Somewhere, a historian just sighed and closed another browser tab.<\/p>\n

The conservative argument has never been that America has no sins. Rather, the conservative argument is that America possesses the moral architecture to correct them. That\u2019s a profound distinction.<\/p>\n

The abolitionist movement didn\u2019t emerge despite America\u2019s founding ideals. It appealed to them. The Civil Rights Movement didn\u2019t argue the Constitution was worthless. It argued America should finally live up to it. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. did not ask the nation to abandon the Declaration of Independence. He called it a promissory note that had yet to be fully honored.<\/p>\n

That\u2019s not anti-American; it\u2019s deeply American.<\/p>\n

As someone who grew up in Memphis, Tennessee, I know our history isn\u2019t tidy. The city carries scars that are impossible to ignore, but it also produced extraordinary resilience, entrepreneurship, faith, music, and community. The lesson wasn\u2019t that America failed beyond repair. The lesson was that imperfect people can build something better without pretending yesterday never happened.<\/p>\n

That distinction matters because conservatives should never become curators of mythology.<\/p>

If we begin defending America by airbrushing every uncomfortable chapter, we\u2019ve already surrendered the intellectual high ground. We criticize the Left for rewriting history to fit modern ideology. We shouldn\u2019t respond by rewriting it to make ourselves more comfortable.<\/p>\n

Truth doesn\u2019t require editing. In fact, truth is one of conservatism\u2019s greatest strengths.<\/p>\n

A confident nation doesn\u2019t panic when someone points out historical failures. It acknowledges them, learns from them, and refuses to let them become the entire story. Likewise, a confident conservative shouldn\u2019t feel compelled to defend every decision made by every previous generation simply because they lived under the same flag.<\/p>\n

Conservatism is supposed to be about conserving principles\u2014not embalming every historical moment in amber.<\/p>\n

That\u2019s why I often find myself telling fellow conservatives something that surprises them: you don\u2019t have to lose the debate over America\u2019s past to win the argument for America\u2019s future.<\/p>\n

The left often treats history as a prison sentence from which there can be no appeal. Some on the Right treat history like a family photo album where every picture is perfectly framed, and everyone smiled all the time.<\/p>\n

Reality is better than either fantasy.<\/p>\n

America is remarkable not because she never stumbled, but because she repeatedly found people willing to stand up, challenge injustice, and call the nation back to its founding principles. That story belongs to all Americans\u2014including Black Americans whose sacrifices, faith, military service, entrepreneurship, and perseverance helped shape this country as surely as anyone else\u2019s.<\/p>\n

That isn\u2019t grievance. That\u2019s ownership.<\/p>\n

I refuse to surrender my inheritance to people who insist America is irredeemable. I also refuse to pretend our history requires cosmetic surgery before it\u2019s worthy of defending.<\/p>\n

Patriotism doesn\u2019t demand selective memory. Instead, it demands intellectual honesty.<\/p>\n

If your love for America depends on pretending she never sinned, it isn\u2019t patriotism\u2014it\u2019s nostalgia. And nostalgia has never written a Constitution, liberated a people, or built a stronger republic.<\/p>
