What seems to have ended the spree is when an armed civilian, at great risk to himself, started firing back, driving the shooter away from the scene.<\/p>

This is a recurring pattern: Mass shootings end, and shootings that are obviously intended to be mass casualty events cannot escalate, when an armed civilian is there to engage the shooter. This is not a slight to the police; it\u2019s just a reality that having someone on the scene is better than waiting for the police. As the saying goes, \u201cWhen seconds count, the police are minutes away.\u201d<\/p>\n

I asked ChatGPT to assemble a list of at least five incidents in which someone on the scene with a legal gun was swiftly able to end what would otherwise have been an infinitely more deadly shooting spree. Here are its results:<\/p>\n

1. Greenwood Park Mall \u2014 Greenwood, Indiana, 2022<\/strong><\/p>\n

A gunman emerged from a restroom into the mall food court and opened fire, killing three people and wounding two. Elisjsha \u201cEli\u201d Dicken<\/strong>, a 22-year-old civilian legally carrying a handgun, fired at the attacker and killed him. Police said Dicken\u2019s intervention ended the shooting extraordinarily quickly and likely prevented many more deaths.<\/p>\n

2. West Freeway Church of Christ \u2014 White Settlement, Texas, 2019<\/strong><\/p>\n

During Sunday services, a man produced a sawed-off shotgun and killed two congregants. Jack Wilson<\/strong>, a church member and volunteer security-team leader, drew his handgun and killed the attacker with one shot as the gunman turned toward the rest of the congregation. The entire attack lasted only seconds.<\/p>\n

Wilson had firearms training and had previously served as a reserve deputy, but he was acting that day as a private church-security volunteer.<\/p>\n

3. New Life Church \u2014 Colorado Springs, Colorado, 2007<\/strong><\/p>\n

Matthew Murray arrived at the church carrying a rifle, multiple handguns, and a large quantity of ammunition. He killed two people in the parking area and entered the church. Jeanne Assam<\/strong>, a former police officer serving as an armed volunteer security guard, confronted him and shot him repeatedly. After being disabled by Assam\u2019s fire, Murray fatally shot himself.<\/p>\n

Thus, it is most precise to say that Assam shot and incapacitated him, ending his attack<\/strong>, although the final fatal wound was self-inflicted.<\/p>\n

4. Trolley Square Mall \u2014 Salt Lake City, Utah, 2007<\/strong><\/p>\n

Sulejman Talovi\u0107 entered the mall with a shotgun, handgun, and substantial ammunition, killing five people and wounding four. Kenneth Hammond<\/strong>, an off-duty Ogden police officer dining with his pregnant wife, drew his concealed handgun and exchanged fire with Talovi\u0107. Hammond\u2019s intervention forced the attacker to concentrate on him and helped contain him until Salt Lake City officers arrived and killed the gunman.<\/p>\n

5. Mercy Fitzgerald Hospital \u2014 Darby, Pennsylvania, 2014<\/strong><\/p>\n

Psychiatric patient Richard Plotts pulled a gun inside psychiatrist Dr. Lee Silverman\u2019s<\/strong> office, killed caseworker Theresa Hunt, and fired at Silverman, grazing his head. Silverman drew his own handgun and fired back, striking Plotts several times. Other hospital employees then subdued the wounded attacker. Authorities found that Plotts still possessed dozens of unspent rounds and believed he intended to shoot additional people.<\/p>

6. Graduation and birthday party \u2014 Charleston, West Virginia, 2022<\/strong><\/p>\n

After being confronted earlier for speeding near children, Dennis Butler returned to an apartment complex with an AR-style rifle and fired toward a crowd attending a graduation and birthday party. An unidentified woman at the party drew her handgun and fatally shot him. Police said no one in the crowd was struck and credited her with saving multiple lives.<\/p>\n

7. Playoffz nightclub \u2014 Lyman, South Carolina, 2016<\/strong><\/p>\n

After an altercation, Jody Ray Thompson began firing into a crowd outside a nightclub. Three people were wounded. A fourth man, who had a concealed-carry permit and was himself being fired upon, drew his handgun and shot Thompson in the leg, ending the attack. Prosecutors did not charge the armed civilian.<\/p>\n

8. Logan Square sidewalk \u2014 Chicago, Illinois, 2015<\/strong><\/p>\n

Everardo Custodio began shooting at a group of people on a sidewalk. An Uber driver who had just dropped off a passenger witnessed the attack, drew his legally carried handgun, and fired six shots, wounding Custodio. No one in the targeted group was injured. Authorities concluded that the driver acted in defense of himself and others and did not charge him.<\/p>\n

9. Fort Smith apartment complex \u2014 Arkansas, 2021<\/strong><\/p>\n

Zachary Arnold used a semiautomatic rifle to kill an 87-year-old woman and then continued firing into neighboring apartments while reportedly calling for residents to come outside. A resident retrieved a hunting rifle and fatally shot Arnold. The prosecuting attorney later ruled the resident\u2019s use of deadly force justified.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

(By the way, that Trolley Square shooter in Salt Lake City was Muslim, although the shooting was immediately ascribed to mental illness and social isolation. Looking back, I\u2019m inclined to ascribe it to his being Muslim.)<\/p>\n

In each instance, thankfully, most of the people in those venues did not become sitting ducks because someone already there was a legally armed good guy. And I happen to believe that there are more good guys in America than bad guys. I also believe that, across America, the good guys with guns should far outnumber the bad guys with guns.<\/p>\n

One more thing: In 2013, in an Obama-era project, the Institute of Medicine and National Research Council published a study entitled Priorities for Research to Reduce the Threat of Firearm-Related Violence<\/em>. I believe the purpose behind the study was to justify ending Second Amendment rights. Unfortunately, the study was honest, and in the section entitled \u201cDefensive Use of Guns,\u201d it stated:<\/p>\n

Almost all national survey estimates indicate that defensive gun uses by victims are at least as common as offensive uses by criminals, with estimates of annual uses ranging from about 500,000 to more than 3 million (Kleck, 2001a), in the context of about 300,000 violent crimes involving firearms in 2008 (BJS, 2010).<\/p>\n

Studies that directly assessed the effect of actual defensive uses of guns (i.e., incidents in which a gun was \u201cused\u201d by the crime victim in the sense of attacking or threatening an offender) have found consistently lower injury rates among gun-using crime victims compared with victims who used other self-protective strategies (Kleck, 1988; Kleck and DeLone, 1993; Southwick, 2000; Tark and Kleck, 2004).<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Guns are tools. In the hands of good people, they do good things. In the hands of bad people, they do bad things. That\u2019s it. And in Twin Falls, luckily for the people at the In-N-Out, a good person had a gun in his hands.<\/p>
