All of us risk situations in which our biases lead us to chase chimeras rather than deal with a real threat before us. Most of us course-correct when faced with reality. We\u2019re not the French, building a Maginot line against the Germans, while ignoring the route through the Ardennes. Leftists, however, never course-correct, at least when it comes to panicking about Christians while ignoring radical Islam.<\/p>

Jared Huffman, a Democrat House member from California, personifies this problem. Even as Muslims are storming the West and engaging in tens of thousands of deadly acts against non-Muslims across the world, including America, he\u2019s convinced he knows the real threat America faces: Christian nationalism<\/p>\n

To that end, Huffman has written a book entitled No Prophets: The Fight to Save Democracy from Christian Nationalism<\/em>. Huffman\u2019s hometown newspaper, The Marin IJ, has given Huffman a glowing review. Note my careful language: It\u2019s not a book review; it\u2019s a Huffman review, touting his statements and focusing on his upbringing as proof that he knows his subject.<\/p>\n

The first sentence sets the tone: \u201cRep. Jared Huffman witnessed the insurrection of Jan. 6, 2021, from his office on Capitol Hill.\u201d Yeah, the famous insurrection when unarmed people walked through doors that the Capitol Police held open for them and, carefully staying between the rope lines, walked respectfully through Congress, and then walked out again. That \u201cinsurrection.\u201d<\/p>\n

But Huffman noticed something deeper than people worried about an election with mail-in voting that was an invitation to fraud, suspicious electronic equipment, vote counts that all stopped in the wee hours when Trump was leading, only to resume with Biden suddenly vaulting into the lead, and the fact that Biden didn\u2019t win any bellwether counties. Instead, he saw a sinister religious crusade.<\/p>\n

On that day and the weeks leading up to it \u2014 as protesters thronged Washington, D.C., to overturn Joe Biden\u2019s victory over Donald Trump in the 2020 presidential election \u2014 Huffman was struck by the veins of extremist religion wending their way through those events.<\/p>\n

These were not gentle, Sermon on the Mount-style expressions of faith.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe MAGA Christian nationalism Trump stoked seethed with grievance and hatred,\u201d Huffman, a seven-term Democrat from San Rafael, says in his new book, \u201cNo Prophets: The Fight to Save Democracy from Christian Nationalism.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

According to the essay, Huffman suddenly realized that the Christian nationalists lurking behind the so-called insurrection had created \u201cthe single most dangerous political movement now facing America.\u201d He even quotes Sinclair Lewis\u2019s statement that \u201cWhen fascism comes to America, it will be wrapped in the flag and carrying a cross.\u201d Lewis, it should be noted, was an avowed socialist and a man completely crippled by alcoholism throughout his life.<\/p>\n

According to Huffman, Liz Cheney, whom we conservatives view as the fanatic anti-Trump leader of the kangaroo hearing that was the January 6 probe, failed in her duty by quashing evidence that the alleged insurrection was actually a Christian nationalist plot:<\/p>\n

Huffman, who is running for reelection in November, sheds new light in the book on the decision by committee vice chair Rep. Liz Cheney, R-Wyoming, to exclude from the report its extensive findings on the role played by Christian nationalism in the insurrection.<\/p>\n

She feared that any criticism of right-wing Christians would be seized on by Fox News and other conservative outlets \u201cto discredit the entire report and alienate millions of ordinary Christians,\u201d Huffman writes.<\/p>

Huffman has a real issue with Christians\u2014and it\u2019s personal. It turns out that he was raised in a fundamentalist congregation in Missouri, and he views Christianity through that prism:<\/p>\n

Raised in Independence, Missouri, he worshipped in a congregation that was an offshoot of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. Huffman\u2019s church was open to \u201cdirect prophecy,\u201d he recalls, a tradition that has long \u201coffered fertile ground for eccentric spin-offs and self-anointed visionaries.\u201d<\/p>\n

In its healthiest form, prophetic belief \u201canimates churches with vitality,\u201d he writes. \u201cLike unstable DNA,\u201d however, \u201cit invites mutation.\u201d<\/p>\n

Under pressure, \u201cprophetic fervor becomes dangerous\u201d \u2014 as Huffman knows too wel<\/em><\/strong>l. (Emphasis mine.)<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

If your church isn\u2019t preaching that God got it wrong when He claimed there were only two sexes and He condemned homosexuality, it\u2019s a problem.<\/p>\n

Today, Huffman calls himself a humanist, which I\u2019ve come to understand means that humans get to make their own rules, many of which are built on four thousand years of Biblical tradition, except when tradition gets in the way of political power or personal lifestyle preferences:<\/p>\n

Huffman, who worked as an attorney for the Natural Resources Defense Council, a leading environmental group, before launching his political career, eventually found clarity in humanism, which he describes as \u201ca moral framework that emphasizes human reason and agency,\u201d while affirming \u201cour responsibility to lead meaningful, ethical lives based on compassion and rational inquiry, without the inducement of fear of an afterlife.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

While Huffman obsesses about Christians, he seems peculiarly blind to problems with Islam\u2014problems like 9\/11 or the almost 50,000 explicitly Islamic terrorist attacks committed since then. There is no comparable list even possible for Christians, Jews, Hindus, or any other faith.<\/p>\n
