In President Trump\u2019s prime time address on July\u00a016, he revealed newly declassified evidence that\u00a0(Mainland)\u00a0China\u00a0had\u00a0spent a mint to acquire\u00a0considerable election data for the 2020 election, including the full personal data sets on 220 million\u00a0eligible and\/or registered\u00a0American voters.\u00a0<\/p>

As many reporters point out, we\u00a0don\u2019t\u00a0yet have all the data to tie up in a neat little bow proving\u00a0how\u00a0this data was used to commit vote fraud.\u00a0\u00a0That would require other,\u00a0very different\u00a0types of information.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

It\u2019s\u00a0notoriously difficult to prove vote fraud, after the fact,\u00a0because of the secret ballot, which prevents us from being able to match a voted ballot to the person who filled it out, among other challenges.\u00a0\u00a0A country therefore needs to be\u00a0proactive, and\u00a0design a system\u00a0that\u2019s\u00a0very difficult\u00a0to cheat in,\u00a0from the outset.\u00a0You\u00a0have to\u00a0stop it from\u00a0happening in the first place, because you\u00a0can\u2019t\u00a0undo the corrupted, fabricated, or stolen vote after\u00a0it\u2019s\u00a0been counted.\u00a0<\/p>\n

At this point, the main thing for us to get from the speech is the fact that China\u00a0definitely\u00a0went\u00a0to the trouble\u00a0and expense\u00a0of\u00a0acquiring\u00a0these records.\u00a0\u00a0Why do that, if not to use them to cheat?\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

It\u2019s\u00a0like someone buying safe-cracking tools. Either he means to become a professional\u00a0locksmith,\u00a0or he means to rob banks;\u00a0there\u2019s\u00a0no other reason to buy them.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

Since foreign governments are not legally allowed to participate in USA elections, we know there\u2019s nothing the Chinese could have done with these files that was legal, so,\u00a0even though we may not yet have proof of what they did, we know that they spent a huge amount of money to obtain them, so they must have planned to do something with them.\u00a0\u00a0But what?\u00a0<\/p>\n

Well, we know what a normal, legal political campaign\u00a0or organization\u00a0does with a list of potential voters.\u00a0It puts them on telemarketing\u00a0and mailing\u00a0lists,\u00a0for\u00a0fundraising, push-polling, volunteer solicitation, and get-out-the-vote (GOTV) operations.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

As a foreign country,\u00a0that\u2019s\u00a0not a legal\u00a0option\u00a0for Beijing.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

And we know what a crooked political campaign\u00a0or organization\u00a0normally\u00a0does with a list like that.\u00a0\u00a0The campaign\u00a0uses the names to track whether they vote or not, then\u00a0casts fabricated mail-in or election-day ballots in their names…\u00a0or attributes illegal campaign contributions to them to\u00a0fool the campaign finance regulators…\u00a0or\u00a0uses their names to pad candidacy petitions,\u00a0or friend-to-friend ads,\u00a0or\u00a0concoct misleading polls, or\u00a0countless other traditional ways to\u00a0participate in elections.\u00a0<\/p>\n

It\u2019s\u00a0likely that China did indeed\u00a0do some of this. Even without having evidence of it, we know that there is simply no reason for a foreign government to spend the money to obtain such data sets if not to use them.\u00a0\u00a0The ongoing scandal around ActBlue, for example, in which a major Democrat fundraising platform methodically\u00a0broke up illegal\u00a0contributions\u00a0and allocated small portions\u00a0to\u00a0countless\u00a0voters without their knowledge,\u00a0to make\u00a0illegal\u00a0campaign\u00a0funds appear legal,\u00a0could well have been related to\u00a0this ongoing practice.\u00a0<\/p>

But we need to think bigger.\u00a0\u00a0Remember the truism that \u201cthe generals are always fighting the last war.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

In studying this issue, and preparing to secure our elections for the future, we should be thinking not of what\u00a0your everyday\u00a0local crooked political machine could do with such a list, but rather, what could\u00a0China<\/em><\/strong>do\u00a0with it?\u00a0\u00a0What could\u00a0only<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0China could do with it?\u00a0<\/p>\n

Well, what do we know \u2014 not theorize, but know without question \u2014 that China does, and has been doing for years?\u00a0<\/p>\n
