Another opening ceremony and another land acknowledgment about how we are doing business on land stolen from this nation or that nation. It\u2019s the way it is whenever the liberals want to celebrate a new presidential library or a new bridge like this one between Michigan and Ontario. It\u2019s the way that people on the other side get over their \u201ccolonialism\u201d guilt or how bad white people were and I guess continue to be.<\/p>\n

The guide acknowledged that we were standing on the ancestral homelands of the Munsee Lenape. He was a careful man in a careful place: the Union Church of Pocantico Hills, the Rockefeller family\u2019s church at the edge of their Kykuit estate in the Hudson Valley of New York. The morning light on the pews streamed in through stained-glass windows by Matisse and Chagall. A few people in the group glanced at me, the Native person in the room, as if to gauge whether what we\u2019d just heard was acceptable.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019d like to think they are looking down on us, pleased with what we have done with the land,\u201d the guide concluded his acknowledgment.<\/p>\n

What we have done with the land? Well, we built a prosperous nation on the land with more respect for the rule of law than whatever was here before. Did the nation that \u201cowned\u201d this land allow its own people to speak about how the land was stolen by them from another nation? It probably was because there is no original owner of the land. Again, the nation that we remember today very likely stole it from another nation. Sorry, but that\u2019s history!<\/p>\n

The real problem is that these acknowledgments are starting to get old and just obnoxious. So stop talking about it and do something tangible. Give the keys and title of \u201cthe stolen land\u201d to the original owners. Let them charge tolls on the bridge or do whatever they want to do. Give the nation a seat in the U.S.-Canada-Mexico trade agreement so they can profit from whatever crosses that bridge from that \u201cstolen land.\u201d<\/p>\n
