After Japan attacked Pearl Harbor, Americans legitimately feared an invasion of the homeland.\u00a0\u00a0The threat of living under a military dictatorship heightened our appreciation of \u2014 and determination to defend \u2014 our freedom.\u00a0\u00a0But in 21st-century America, the United States is the sole superpower, and the likelihood of a foreign invasion seems remote.<\/p>

Perhaps that\u2019s why we take our freedom for granted \u2014 because we don\u2019t sense it at risk.\u00a0\u00a0Unfortunately, our sense of security has blinded us to a much more insidious risk to our freedom: a government that we allowed to grow, far beyond anything our founders envisioned.<\/p>\n

The men who risked everything to bequeath freedom to us understood that freedom wanes as government grows<\/em>.\u00a0\u00a0That\u2019s why they gave us the 10th Amendment \u2014 to keep the government small.<\/p>\n

During my elementary school years (way back in the pre-internet \u201960s), we were taught that boys will be boys, girls can get pregnant (because boys will be boys), socialism is bad, and freedom is what makes us exceptional.\u00a0\u00a0Now most schools teach that every problem needs a government solution.<\/p>\n

This \u201cgovernment needs to solve every problem\u201d mindset has given us an explosion of government overhead, with a correspondingly negative impact on our freedom.<\/p>\n

Per USAFacts, our government currently employs about 2.9 million civilians, not including state and local government employees.\u00a0\u00a0To feed that monster, the federal budget has grown to an astronomical 7.3 trillion dollars per year (per the Treasury Department) \u2014 about 2 trillion of which is borrowed annually against our children\u2019s future.\u00a0\u00a0It would require the gold of 12 Fort Knoxes just to pay the federal government\u2019s bills \u2014 every year!\u00a0\u00a0Unfortunately, that is also money taken away from wealth creation \u2014 each and every year.\u00a0\u00a0That financial burden is a huge drag on the economy, reducing the prosperity of every American \u2014 at least those not on the public dole.\u00a0\u00a0As anyone on the lower end of the income scale can testify, destitution limits one\u2019s options \u2014 one\u2019s freedom.\u00a0\u00a0That\u2019s one piece of our freedom problem.<\/p>\n

The burden on our economy isn\u2019t the biggest problem created by our spendaholic Congress \u2014 though it is the most visible.\u00a0\u00a0The federal budget is also a measure of our government\u2019s size.\u00a0\u00a0That should concern us because freedom wanes as government grows<\/em>.\u00a0\u00a0As our government grows, the thing that makes America exceptional shrinks \u2014 our individual freedom to manage our affairs.\u00a0\u00a0The true cost of government would be better stated in terms of freedom lost than dollars spent \u2014 though that\u2019s considerably harder to quantify.<\/p>\n

Let\u2019s look at how our government spends that 7 trillion bucks.\u00a0\u00a0Our millions of \u201cpublic servants\u201d<\/p>\n
