I grew up in Memphis, Tennessee. No matter where life has taken me since, it will always be \u201cback home.\u201d Like many Americans, I still keep in touch with family and friends there, and when immigration enforcement became more visible in parts of the country, I noticed something that surprised me.<\/p>

The conversation I was hearing from people back home sounded very different from the one dominating cable news. It wasn\u2019t outrage or panic, but something remarkably simple: \u201cWe feel safer.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

Whether one agrees or disagrees with current immigration policy, that perspective deserves to be heard. Instead, it is often dismissed before the conversation even begins.<\/p>\n

The national debate over immigration has become so polarized that we\u2019ve forgotten an important truth: the people who live in affected neighborhoods often experience these policies differently than those commenting from television studios, think tanks, or social media.<\/p>\n

For some Americans, immigration is primarily a political issue, an opportunity to signal their political virtues and pseudo-superiority; for others, it is a neighborhood issue. Those are not the same thing.<\/p>\n

Every nation has both the right and the responsibility to know who is entering its borders and who remains within them. That principle is neither radical nor uniquely American. Nearly every sovereign country on earth maintains immigration laws, visa requirements, and procedures for removing those who violate them. But somehow, the left turned the debate from how borders should be enforced to whether borders should even exist at all. (At least in America, because we know how much the left loves borders when they have to do with Gaza, or Crimea, etc.)<\/p>\n

Opposing illegal immigration is frequently portrayed as hostility toward immigrants themselves. Yet America has long been a nation shaped by lawful immigration. Millions have come here legally, built businesses, served in our military, raised families, and strengthened the fabric of the country. Respecting legal immigration and enforcing immigration law are not contradictory ideas, but complementary ones.<\/p>\n

What concerns me is how quickly we dismiss the experiences of ordinary residents who simply want safer neighborhoods. Their observations deserve consideration, even if they complicate a preferred political narrative. When someone tells me that increased law enforcement presence has made their neighborhood feel safer, my first instinct isn\u2019t to argue with them. It\u2019s to ask why they feel that way.<\/p>

I\u2019ve spent years working in nonprofit leadership and community advocacy. One lesson I learned early is that durable solutions begin by taking people seriously. If residents consistently tell us they are worried about crime, disorder, or the inability of government to enforce existing laws, those concerns shouldn\u2019t be brushed aside simply because they don\u2019t fit a particular ideological framework. Communities are healthiest when people believe the rules apply fairly and consistently. That principle extends beyond immigration.<\/p>\n

Whether we\u2019re talking about violent crime, fraud, drug trafficking, or unlawful entry into the country, selective enforcement eventually erodes public trust. Citizens begin to wonder whether laws exist merely as suggestions, enforced only when politically convenient.<\/p>\n

A constitutional republic can\u2019t survive that. It depends on the rule of law.<\/p>\n

That doesn\u2019t mean every immigration action is flawless or that every enforcement decision is beyond criticism. Government officials, like all human beings, are capable of mistakes and deserve appropriate oversight. Accountability and enforcement are not competing values; they reinforce one another. But we should also resist the temptation to reduce every immigration operation to a caricature.<\/p>\n

Supporting enforcement of immigration law is not an either\/or fallacy, as the left would have us believe. Americans can support treating every person with dignity while also believing that immigration laws should be enforced. They can welcome legal immigrants while expecting government to maintain secure borders. They can value compassion without abandoning order. Those positions are neither extreme nor contradictory. They\u2019re practical.<\/p>\n

Perhaps that\u2019s why the conversations I continue to have with people back home stay with me. They remind me that public policy is ultimately measured not only by speeches in Washington but by the lived experience of ordinary citizens.<\/p>\n

If someone tells us they feel safer, we shouldn\u2019t reflexively assume they\u2019re motivated by fear or prejudice, and we should remember that the voices of people living in America\u2019s neighborhoods deserve as much attention as the voices dominating America\u2019s television screens. Let\u2019s not forget that healthy democracies aren\u2019t defined by unanimous agreement.<\/p>\n
