A few weeks ago, I reviewed Eric Metaxas\u2019s bestselling book Revolution: The Birth of the Greatest Nation in the History of the World<\/em>.\u00a0\u00a0Since then, it has remained on the New York Times bestselling list and is currently ranked number two in nonfiction behind Maggie Haberman\u2019s TDS offering, Regime Change<\/em>.<\/p>

One would have thought a book published during the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence would be stocked and displayed prominently at Barnes & Noble.\u00a0\u00a0Instead, during his frequent appearances on Steve Bannon\u2019s War Room<\/em> program, the author testifies that the nation\u2019s leading storefront bookseller doesn\u2019t typically have copies on hand but will instead order them for interested customers.\u00a0\u00a0Meanwhile, Jill Biden\u2019s execrable View from the East Wing<\/em>, which quickly fell off the Times bestseller list into remainder obscurity, is prominently displayed alongside the other Times bestsellers \u2014 except for Revolution<\/em>.<\/p>\n

What gives here?\u00a0\u00a0Anyone with a memory stretching back to the Biden administration and pre-Musk Twitter or even observing listing priorities for current Google searches doesn\u2019t have to speculate much about the answer to that question: corporate censorship.\u00a0\u00a0The question then arises: What is it about Metaxas\u2019s book that Barnes & Noble finds sufficiently objectionable to forgo profits and customer satisfaction?\u00a0\u00a0The likely answer for secular management is the book\u2019s unacceptable emphasis on the Revolution\u2019s Christian roots.\u00a0<\/p>\n

For Democrats, it would be bad enough that the book exposes the long planted lie that America\u2019s Founders were deists for whom God\u2019s intervention in human affairs ended with the world\u2019s creation, but to substitute the role of biblical Christianity for Enlightenment \u201cReason\u201d was a bridge too far.\u00a0\u00a0Imagine, giving credit to a \u201cBlack Robe Regiment\u201d of\u00a0\u00a0\u201cNo King but Jesus\u201d preachers for stirring up images of freedom like that of the Israelites fleeing from Egyptian bondage \u2014 the symbol Benjamin Franklin suggested for the new nation\u2019s official seal.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Everyone should know (even if it isn\u2019t true) that secular philosophes<\/em> like Voltaire and Rousseau who inspired the French Revolution (and its Reign of Terror) deserve top billing for the Founders\u2019 passion for \u201cliberty, equality, and fraternity\u201d \u2014 a phrase missing from America\u2019s revolutionary discourse.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>

And if those violations of historical etiquette weren\u2019t sufficient grounds for book banishment, Metaxas has the temerity to note that colonial leaders like George Washington actually believed that God\u2019s providential aide was contingent on his troops\u2019 moral uprightness and deportment consistent with their \u201csacred\u201d cause.\u00a0\u00a0Adding insult to injury, Metaxas contrasts the biblically grounded morality of most colonials with that of hedonistic British elites and their brutal Hessian mercenaries \u2014 as if, again in true Old Testament fashion, God\u2019s blessing were somehow connected to morality.\u00a0\u00a0Finally, Metaxas describes incidents (like the fortuitous fog-shrouded exodus of Washington\u2019s troops across New York\u2019s East River) that make the general\u2019s religious fantasy seem plausible.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

Barnes and Noble will have none of it.\u00a0\u00a0They weren\u2019t established to promote revisionist history, even if accurate, unless it happens to be revisionism of the 1619 or Howard Zinn variety and comports with their political druthers.<\/p>\n
