Twenty years ago, George W. Bush spent the political capital of his second term on an idea he believed could reshape American retirement security: letting workers divert a portion of their Social Security payroll taxes into personal investment accounts they would own and control. It was ambitious, it was contested, and by the end of 2005 it was dead — sunk by opposition that crossed party lines and a public not yet ready to trade a guaranteed government check for market risk. Two decades later, a different administration has succeeded where Bush’s did not — not by touching Social Security, but by building something adjacent to it. The “Trump Account” program, created under the One Big Beautiful Bill Act and launched this month, seeds a $1,000 federal deposit into a tax-advantaged investment account for every eligible child born between 2025 and 2028. It’s a genuinely novel piece of policy: a nudge toward an ownership society, delivered at birth, compounding quietly for eighteen years before a young adult ever touches it.<\/p>\n

But there’s a structural flaw sitting inside this otherwise promising design, and it’s worth naming before the accounts have another decade to compound around it: Trump Accounts have no inflation-hedging option at all.<\/p>\n

By statute, funds in a Trump Account can only go into mutual funds or ETFs tracking the S&P 500 or a broad U.S. equity index. No bonds. No international exposure. No Treasury Inflation-Protected Securities. No gold or commodities exposure of any kind, whether through bullion-backed funds or even mining-equity ETFs whose eligibility remains genuinely unclear under current guidance. It is, by design, a single-asset-class mandate.<\/p>\n

Compare that to the retirement vehicles Trump Accounts are supposed to set young Americans up to eventually use. A traditional IRA or a Roth IRA can hold TIPS, real estate investment trusts, gold ETFs, international funds, or virtually any other asset class an account holder chooses. Those accounts already give savers the tools to defend their purchasing power against a rising price level. The newborn accounts, ironically, do not.<\/p>\n

\"Inflation\"<\/figure>\nThis is not a small omission. It is the single largest design gap in the program, and it matters most in exactly the situation we’re likely facing.<\/p>

IRAs and Roth IRAs have their own well-documented vulnerability to inflation — not in what they’re allowed to hold, but in how the program is administered. Contribution limits are fixed dollar figures that Congress adjusts only periodically, in $500 or $1,000 increments, rather than continuously. In a high-inflation stretch, the real value of what a saver is permitted to contribute lags behind rising prices until the next adjustment catches up. It’s a real erosion, but at least it’s a correctable, temporary one, and savers retain the ability to defend the money already inside the account by choosing inflation-resistant holdings.<\/p>\n

Trump Accounts have no such escape valve. If inflation runs hotter over the next eighteen years than the historical average — and there are real reasons to think it might, given persistent fiscal deficits, a Federal Reserve navigating competing political pressures, and a global monetary environment more volatile than the one that shaped most retirement-planning assumptions — the accounts have no internal defense mechanism. A childhood account locked entirely into equities will still benefit from real economic growth, but equities are not a clean inflation hedge on their own; they respond to inflation shocks unevenly, often badly in the short and medium term, and the account holder has no ability to rotate into TIPS, gold, or real assets to manage that risk the way an IRA holder can.<\/p>\n

In other words: the program asks families to trust an eighteen-year, uninterruptible bet on a single asset class, at a moment when the case for diversification against currency debasement is arguably stronger than it’s been in decades.<\/p>\n

None of this requires abandoning the program’s core insight — that early, compounding equity exposure is one of the most powerful wealth-building tools available, and that giving every American child a stake in it is worth doing. The fix is narrower and more modest: expand the eligible-investment menu to include the same inflation-hedging instruments IRAs and Roth IRAs already permit. TIPS funds. A modest allowance for gold-backed or gold-mining ETFs. Broad real-asset funds. None of this dilutes the growth thesis; it simply gives account holders —\u00a0or, practically, the parents (authorized individuals) managing these accounts on their children’s behalf —\u00a0the same defensive tools available everywhere else in the retirement system.<\/p>\n

Bush’s personal accounts died because the public wasn’t ready to accept market risk in exchange for a guarantee. Trump’s newborn accounts have already cleared that bar; the public and Congress accepted the premise. What they haven’t yet grappled with is a narrower but no less important question: an eighteen-year, non-diversifiable bet on U.S. equities is not the same thing as a growth strategy with room to adapt. If inflation runs the way current fiscal and monetary trends suggest it might, the account structure meant to build wealth for a generation of American children could instead demonstrate, in real time, exactly how much a single missing asset class can cost.<\/p>
