As LifeSite News reports, a new article from the New England Journal of Medicine discusses organ donation, and how the current ethical framework is not really a \u201cmoral absolute\u201d but more of a \u201cmoral anchor\u201d that can be reinterpreted and readapted\u2026to fit the serial killers\u2019 whims and impulses.<\/p>

Dr. Heidi Klessig\u2014who has also written for American Thinker\u2014explains that what Dr. Robert Truog and his colleagues are arguing for is just the \u201cnext logical step\u201d in the world of organ harvesting, \u201csince we\u2019ve already redefined death\u201d to \u201csuit our needs.\u201d<\/p>\n

The NEJM article builds an argument around what\u2019s known as the Dead Donor Rule (DDR), which dictates that a patient \u201cmust be dead before organ procurement,\u201d a standard meant to \u201cmaintain the public\u2019s trust\u201d and prevent exploitation. But, how much life is in a dead man? As Klessig writes, \u201ccorpses cannot donate viable organs.\u201d All<\/em> organ donors are in fact alive at the time of retrieval\u2014hence the reason their organs are still useful and can be harvested\u2014but it\u2019s only because we\u2019ve redefined death, as Klessig notes, that the DDR can even be a \u201cstandard.\u201d You can now be declared \u201cdead\u201d when there\u2019s \u201cbrain death,\u201d which isn\u2019t actually death, because the brain is still very much alive, though seriously injured to whatever extent\u2014and, that injury may or may not be healable. (There have been people who have recovered from what was deemed by doctors to be an \u201cirreversible\u201d brain injury.) Dead people don\u2019t need to eat and use the bathroom, but living people (even with severely diminished brain function) do.<\/p>\n

Anyway, since donors are in fact alive when they \u201cdonate\u201d their organs, is it really that much of a stretch to start including the people who are opting for euthanasia? They\u2019re going to die imminently, why not allow them the choice of organ \u201cdonation\u201d and \u201crespect\u201d their wishes? Here\u2019s an excerpt from the NEJM paper:<\/p>

In death by organ donation, the patient\u2019s authorization, experience, and outcome are not altered by whether death occurs moments before or during organ retrieval. Ethical focus should therefore shift away from identifying a precise moment of biologic death and toward respecting patients\u2019 autonomous decisions, ensuring that safeguards against coercion and exploitation are robust, and advocating for a transparent and publicly accountable process.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

This isn\u2019t a rejection of ethical standards or even the DDR, it\u2019s simply \u201crecontextualization\u201d they say!<\/p>\n

What\u2019s the \u201cnext logical step\u201d after that? How soon until they\u2019re \u201crecontextualizing\u201d it to remove the \u201cvoluntary\u201d aspect? Until they\u2019re matching China\u2019s method of organ \u201cdonation\u201d and cutting hearts out from our own citizens who are\u00a0strapped down on gurneys?<\/p>
