I saw Indiana Jones\u2019s jacket and hat, which was probably why I wanted to be an archaeologist, and why I pursued a history degree in college. I got to see Amelia Earhart\u2019s aviation gear, which is probably why I dreamed of being a pilot. (I completed all my PPL training, but never took that final check ride; I need to revisit this when time and money allows.) And I got to see George Washington\u2019s battle sword, a man whose portrait is found on multiple walls across my home, and why Valley Forge is one of my favorite places on the planet.<\/p>\n

While looking up the event this morning to see if I had my dates right, I stumbled across an old newspaper article written on the exhibit which was titled, \u201cSearching the \u2018American\u2019s Smithsonian\u2019 exhibit for signs of gay life.\u201d The author of the essay was a \u201cproud, gay, \u2018tax-paying American\u2019\u201d who felt compelled to criticize the artifacts chosen, as they lacked in \u201cgay\u201d and \u201cqueer\u201d focus. I can confirm: I don\u2019t remember being subject to any homosexuality and perversion.<\/p>

Well that man, whoever he is, would be happy to note that the Smithsonian now has gone full circle, becoming the \u201cgay\u201d and \u201cqueer\u201d museum of his dreams, indistinguishable from a kinky sex shop.
