On Tuesday, I wrote an essay on the subway-riding black woman who\u2019d been the subject of a \u201chaunting\u201d image taken by a Reuters photographer\u2014not the picture showing her bent over and spraying her feces across a subway car floor, but the racially provocative one where she sat in a literal sea of Patriot Front members, giving a \u201cthousand-yard stare\u201d of \u201cdignified terror,\u201d in the words of The 19th News\u2019s Errin Haines.<\/p>

Now, I included an observation made by someone online, which noted how quickly this woman\u2019s \u201cmental illness\u201d vanished when she felt a constraint to behave like a normal person\u2014that being surrounded by a bunch of white men whom she surmised wouldn\u2019t take an ounce of her shi*. This isn\u2019t to say she\u2019s a person with no mental issues, but that day, sitting quietly and civilly on the subway, her \u201cmental illness\u201d didn\u2019t get to be her excuse to yank her shorts down, get on her knees, and take a dump on the public transit system.<\/p>\n

And that needs to be expounded upon, because it\u2019s actually really profound.<\/p>\n

This isn\u2019t to say mental illness isn\u2019t real, but it\u2019s the cop out we\u2019ve been saying it is, the \u201cmitigating factor\u201d that really shouldn\u2019t be part of the judicial process at all\u2014and the Subway Shi**er just proved it. How mentally ill are these people, actually<\/em>? Is it really a mental illness outburst or meltdown we\u2019re witnessing with scenes like this? Is Decarlos Brown Jr. in the midst of a psychotic episode when he knifes a white girl and asserts \u201cI got that white bit*h\u201d as he leaves the scene of the crime? What about the endless stories of third world migrants committing heinous and violent crimes, either here or in Europe, only to be essentially released from culpability because of their \u201cmental health\u201d status? This was from February (note the \u201cuntil he recovers\u201d admission):<\/p>\n

We\u2019re witnessing disturbed people who have been permitted to indulge in every single animalistic impulse that\u2019s ever zipped across their brains, with essentially no consequences.
