The eyes of the nation\u00a0are\u00a0on the 2026 U.S. Senate race in Maine, since a peculiar\u00a0Marxist\u00a0won the Democrat party nomination\u00a0this past\u00a0June.\u00a0<\/p>

In an explosive\u00a0Politico\u00a0report\u00a0released Monday, July 6, it was alleged that Democrat nominee\u00a0Graham Platner sexually assaulted his former girlfriend,\u00a0Jenny Racicot in 2021.<\/p>\n

The nominee categorically denies the charge.\u00a0<\/p>\n

They\u00a0apparently agree\u00a0that their relationship was \u201con again, off again,\u201d having met on Bumble in 2019,\u00a0which makes it\u00a0somewhat murky, but of course if she said no<\/em> at the time, that\u2019s rape.\u00a0\u00a0She reports that she ended the relationship permanently after this\u00a02021\u00a0incident.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Several prominent\u00a0Democrats have begun\u00a0retracting their endorsements of the nominee,\u00a0apparently in\u00a0the hope that he will drop out of the race in time\u00a0to meet Maine\u2019s July 13 deadline for\u00a0the party to\u00a0be allowed\u00a0a\u00a0two-week\u00a0window in which\u00a0to\u00a0select a replacement.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Incumbent senator Susan Collins (R) has been a resilient political icon in Maine for decades.\u00a0\u00a0As a moderate Republican, she has\u00a0comfortably\u00a0won,\u00a0consistently,\u00a0in a state that Democrats\u00a0always expect to capture.\u00a0\u00a0Would the Democrats have won this time, with Platner?\u00a0\u00a0It\u2019s\u00a0difficult to imagine.\u00a0\u00a0But the\u00a0party continued to at least pay lip service to their confidence in Platner until this latest story broke.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The Statute of Limitations\u00a0<\/h1>\n

We\u00a0shouldn\u2019t\u00a0move on to discuss this issue without addressing the elephant in the room, from the perspective of the criminal justice system:\u00a0If\u00a0this happened five years ago, why\u00a0didn\u2019t\u00a0the victim come forward before this?\u00a0<\/p>\n

The victim claims that she\u00a0didn\u2019t\u00a0come forward about it earlier because she was conflicted; Being a leftist like him, she was hesitant to hurt his campaign.\u00a0\u00a0But Platner\u00a0wasn\u2019t\u00a0a politician\u00a0five years ago,\u00a0when the alleged assault occurred.\u00a0\u00a0There was no political reason to protect him at the time.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Society has statutes of\u00a0limitations\u00a0for two primary reasons.<\/p>\n

First, we want a prosecution to be fair to everyone involved \u2014 both suspect and victim \u2014 so\u00a0we\u00a0want to move on it while the evidence is fresh,\u00a0witnesses\u2019 memories are at their most reliable, and\u00a0we have the best\u00a0odds of getting it right.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The second reason is\u00a0arguably even more\u00a0important from a public policy perspective: We want to remove criminals from society as soon as possible,\u00a0in order to\u00a0protect\u00a0potential\u00a0future victims.\u00a0\u00a0The longer a crime goes unreported or unprosecuted, the longer the\u00a0criminal is out loose in public, able to victimize other innocents.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

Statutes of limitations vary, both from state to state and from crime to crime.\u00a0\u00a0As it happens, it would still be legal for Ms. Racicot to press charges today, if she wanted, because Maine has no statute of limitations for rape.\u00a0\u00a0But as of the reports available\u00a0at press time, she has not filed charges with the state \u2014 only with the press.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

One wonders why.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Society is at its best when there are as few crimes as possible.\u00a0\u00a0You\u00a0accomplish\u00a0that goal by removing guilty criminals from\u00a0society\u00a0as soon as their predatory behavior is known.\u00a0\u00a0Regardless of\u00a0statutes of limitations,\u00a0victims\u00a0should always\u00a0file charges\u00a0right away, not after\u00a0discussing it friends or therapists for years\u00a0and years.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

Why Come Forward Today?\u00a0<\/h1>\n

It is widely theorized that Democrat machers have been watching this campaign with fear, seeing their hopes of knocking out Susan Collins diminish as\u00a0embarrassments and allegations about Platner mount.\u00a0<\/p>\n

He has been accused of abuse against women (Ms. Racicot is\u00a0hardly\u00a0the first), and of countless misogynist statements online, and of racist views, and\u00a0of Nazi sympathies, all of which he blames on PTSD and other personal problems, but all of which he naturally wholeheartedly\u00a0\u201cregrets.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

We\u2019ve\u00a0had politicians with tattoos before, but Graham Platner is the first U.S. Senate candidate to sport a Nazi concentration camp guard tattoo on his chest.\u00a0\u00a0Is saying \u201cI\u2019m\u00a0sorry\u201d enough?\u00a0<\/p>\n

As his polling suffered from greater public awareness of his flaws,\u00a0without causing him to drop out, some suspect that\u00a0it was members of his own party who went looking for more allegations, just so they could force his hand\u00a0while there might still be time to salvage their chances against Senator Collins.\u00a0<\/p>

So when this young lady showed up\u00a0out of the blue, in recent weeks, choosing\u00a0at long last\u00a0to come forward, just\u00a0under the wire,\u00a0how did she know whom to call to ensure maximum impact?\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

Why did she reach out to Politico rather than\u00a0the local police, as normal\u00a0assault\u00a0victims do?\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

Even if the allegation is\u00a0100 percent\u00a0accurate, this is as clear a political hit as you can get, and it\u00a0is just as\u00a0clearly\u00a0friendly\u00a0fire.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The Lesson for 2026\u00a0<\/h1>\n

When Platner is\u00a0almost inevitably forced out\u00a0of the race\u00a0this week, the Democrats will proudly\u00a0attempt\u00a0to claim the moral high ground for doing the right\u00a0thing and\u00a0replacing their\u00a0deeply flawed\u00a0candidate.\u00a0<\/p>\n

But should they be able to get away with\u00a0that?\u00a0<\/p>\n

The Democrats, after all, nominated this guy in an open primary.\u00a0\u00a0Democrat voters selected him over more \u201cnormal,\u201d\u00a0relatively inoffensive\u00a0mainstream Democrats just three months ago, when\u00a0virtually all\u00a0his\u00a0many\u00a0shortcomings were already known to their Maine primary voters.\u00a0<\/p>\n

There is no difference\u00a0on\u00a0the issues, after all, between Platner and the less obviously\u00a0reprehensible Democrat candidates he defeated.\u00a0\u00a0They all agree on everything from confiscatory taxation to rabid overregulation, from their lockstep\u00a0disdain for human life to the\u00a0open borders policies that the intersectionality of Democrats require every modern progressive to champion, no matter how much damage such policies do to their constituents, their\u00a0country, and their\u00a0world.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The only difference between them is that Mr. Platner\u00a0made his offensiveness too visible, through a tattoo, some published posts, and a few cases of past behavior.\u00a0\u00a0If it\u00a0were about\u00a0issues, the primary voters could have chosen any of the others, but they\u00a0consciously\u00a0chose the most\u00a0blatantly repulsive one of the\u00a0group.\u00a0<\/p>\n

If he had continued to be just as\u00a0reprehensible\u00a0a\u00a0candidate\u00a0as the rest of his fellow Democrat\u00a0candidates, but\u00a0had the sense to keep it more of a secret, he would enjoy the full support of the Democrat party going into the general\u00a0election.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Platner had his Nazi tattoo covered up.\u00a0\u00a0He had his social media scrubbed.\u00a0\u00a0He apologized for past behavior and said he was a new person.\u00a0\u00a0Until this latest allegation arrived on the scene, the Democrats hoped that simply repudiating all his past writings, his past actions, and his past tattoos would be sufficient\u00a0to coast to victory.\u00a0<\/p>\n

But this raises yet another question: What\u00a0is the election process for, if\u00a0not\u00a0to evaluate the\u00a0full life experiences\u00a0of the candidates and choose among them?\u00a0<\/p>\n

If,\u00a0in district after district, state after state, we allow Democrat nominees to evade responsibility for past positions, behaviors, and beliefs,\u00a0holding Republicans\u2019 feet to the fire for every past indiscretion while forgiving a mountain of Democrat sins, what is the point of holding elections at all?\u00a0<\/p>\n

It\u2019s\u00a0time the American public stopped letting candidates get away with\u00a0any of\u00a0these\u00a0alleged rebirths.\u00a0\u00a0\u201cYou got a Nazi tattoo, you shook down a car dealer, you\u00a0used\u00a0drugs, you\u00a0dated a Chinese spy, you forced the closure of a business, you destroyed our health care system?\u00a0\u00a0Well,\u00a0that\u2019s\u00a0what\u00a0we\u2019re\u00a0judging you on, against your opponent\u2019s equally\u00a0real r\u00e9sum\u00e9.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

If you\u00a0wouldn\u2019t\u00a0deserve the support of your desired constituents once\u00a0your\u00a0real\u00a0identity\u00a0got exposed, you\u00a0shouldn\u2019t\u00a0have run in the first place.\u00a0<\/p>\n
