We’re celebrating 1776 on this coming July 4,\u00a0but events from 1825-1827 also resonate as a lesson as to\u00a0whether we will survive another 250 years.<\/p>\n

The contrasts are telling.<\/p>\n

On one side, we have a celebration of individual liberty and limited government, begun as an experiment 250 years ago, which we all know resulted in the greatest surge in prosperity and innovation for mankind and in the greatest country in the world.<\/p>\n

And on the other hand, the resurrection of “new ideas” from ancient Greece for complete societal control and unlimited government, begun as an experiment 200 years ago in several locations around the country in what was called “socialism,” which\u00a0we know has resulted in untold misery and mass murder, and has never worked in all the centuries that it’s been tried.<\/p>\n

Extraordinarily enough, you can see this contrast in the reactions of the World Cup visitors to the true face of economic freedom, and the in demonization of liberty by Democrats running for office.<\/p>\n

The former sees the vestiges of freedom brought by our ongoing experiment in liberty and limited government, while the latter can only complain that no one wants to let them completely run their lives ‘for their own good.’<\/p>\n

But the truly incredible story is how we got to this point, a story that stretches back several centuries and indicates something extraordinary is taking place. Because America has always been a special place, preordained to fulfill an epic role in history.<\/p>\n

There is something much deeper than mere coincidence in the events that occurred even before the beginning of our American story that are integral to the upcoming conflict.<\/p>\n

Consider that the Americas were the location chosen for a fictional socialist society centuries before the first use of that word and the creation of this collectivist ideology. Because it was in 1516 that ‘A Man for All Seasons’, Sir Thomas More wrote the book Utopia, coining the word that means ‘no place’. This extraordinary work described a futuristic society that followed the precepts of Plato, with “all things being there common, every man hath abundance of everything,” which suspiciously sounds like “From each according to his abilities, to each according to his needs<\/em>.” \u00a0Leftists term this work as ‘The first theoretical expression of a genuinely socialist position.’<\/em><\/p>\n

As our American story began, these two yet-unnamed concepts were intertwined in the first colonies at Jamestown and Plymouth, serving as early experiments that would soon fail. It’s likely that most people are unaware of these facts, as is likely the case with most on the left.<\/p>\n

There was a spirit of exploration and experimentation in the young nation 50 years after the Declaration of Independence, with many trying out various types of societies to see what would work. One of these was called the ‘villages of cooperation,’ set up in a number of different locations around the country as well as overseas. It was in 1825 that one of the first of these was started by industrialist Robert Owen when he purchased a small town on the banks of the Wabash River in the state of Indiana, which he had christened New Harmony.<\/p>\n

New Harmony was to be a “community of equality” heralding a new way of life. Owen’s followers would soon coin a new name for his vision: “utopian socialism.”<\/p>\n

On July 4, 1826, the 50th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, Owen issued his own variation, which he called the “Declaration of Mental Independence.” From that day forward, Owen proclaimed, men would be free from what he called a “trinity of the most monstrous evils that could be combined to inflict mental and physical evil upon the whole race … I refer to private property, absurd and irrational systems of religion and marriage founded upon individual property.”<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

This also inspired the first printed use of the word socialist in a letter to the November 1827 edition of the Co-operative Magazine and Monthly Herald. Two centuries ago, the nemesis of Economic Freedom began its long-storied history of abject failure.<\/p>\n

Thus, it was a mere 50 years after the start of the greatest experiment in limited government and individual liberty. Another set of experiments began in an unlimited government and complete societal control. In the part of the world that had been the fictional setting of ‘The first theoretical expression of a genuinely socialist position<\/em>‘ centuries before, and the location of the first experiments in the concept of collectivism.<\/p>\n

There are differences between the two.<\/p>\n

Despite the left’s attempts at rewriting history, while accusing the pro-freedom right of doing the same thing.<\/p>\n

The history is easy to trace for America 250; the events are clearly outlined for everyone. Thomas Jefferson wrote the best mission statement for any nation in the Declaration of Independence. And to get the proper context, one should read the original draft. The purpose is clearly stated, principles of limited government that protect individual liberty are clearly explained in plain language that can be easily understood.<\/p>\n

Compare this to trying to define socialism, in that it’s easier to nail Jell-O\u00a0to a wall. As the Democrats have moved further and further to the farthest reaches of the far left, they are repudiating their very belief systems from only a few decades ago, attempting to rewrite history in the process. \u00a0They used to be anti-communist, with it understood that there wasn’t much of a difference between the various forms of collectivism.<\/p>\n

Fascism, Nazism, Communism and Socialism are only superficial variations of the same monstrous theme \u2014 collectivism.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Ayn Rand wrote that in a letter on March 19, 1944.<\/p>\n

There isn’t any difference in totalitarian states. I don’t care what you call them-you call them Nazi, Communist or Fascist, or Franco, or anything else\u00a0— they are all alike.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

That’s from President Harry S.\u00a0Truman, speaking to the Association of Radio News Analysts on\u00a0May 13, 1947.<\/p>\n

Socialists of today are often vague about terms and the history of their movement. Dancing around references to ‘change’ and ‘democratic socialism’ and taking extreme umbrage at being called communists or National Socialists. Carefully trying to avoid any references to their failures of the past. Using burner accounts to hide their internet posts.<\/p>\n

One side is celebrating history; the other is ignoring it for political purposes.<\/p>\n

But now we see the difference between those celebrating 250 years of limited government and individual liberty and those who should at least acknowledge their history and their 200th anniversary, but instead they are referring to this as Owen-Maclure 200, keeping terms like communism and socialism out of the mix.<\/p>\n

Just as it seems that they scrupulously avoid teaching and talking about the countless times their failed collectivist ideology has been tried.<\/p>\n

To be blunt, it is clear that they don’t need their acolytes to know anything, just the latest talking points about these ‘new<\/em>‘ ideas they have. And since they don’t know their history, they can easily accept them as ‘new.<\/em>‘ \u00a0 After all, they work off of emotional arguments that some people have too much, and they, of course, have too little.<\/p>\n

So, what do we do about this?<\/p>\n

It’s starting to seem like there is a civil war breaking out in the party between the fascist far-left factions and the moderate middle Democrats. Thus, this is a battle for the moderate middle, as it has always been, but that is doubly so now.<\/p>\n

We’re initially not trying to bring them over to our side \u2013 the side of sanity. We’re only trying to make the case that their collectivist comrades are going further left off a cliff, and they don’t need to follow them like little leftist lemmings. We simply teach them the facts, such as the history of socialism. Show them that the oft-repeated line “it’s never been tried before” is a complete lie. Then move on from there.<\/p>\n
