The UMC sees it differently.<\/p>\n

The debate over same-sex marriage has divided the United Methodist Church for more than five decades. Since 1972, the denomination’s governing Book of Discipline<\/em> had declared that “the practice of homosexuality is incompatible with Christian teaching” and prohibited clergy from performing same-sex weddings or the ordination of “self-avowed practicing homosexuals.” As many pastors and regional conferences increasingly declined to enforce those restrictions, the conflict grew into one of the most contentious disputes in American Protestantism.<\/p>\n

The division came to a head in 2019, when delegates from around the world voted to reaffirm the church’s traditional teaching on marriage and strengthen enforcement of its policies. But the denomination created a process allowing congregations to disaffiliate, and more than 7,000 U.S. churches left between 2022 and 2024, most joining the conservative Global Methodist Church. With many of its traditionalist congregations gone, the United Methodist Church’s 2024 General Conference voted to remove its longstanding bans on same-sex marriage and the ordination of openly gay clergy, as well as the statement that homosexuality is “incompatible with Christian teaching.”<\/p>\n

That break seems complete now, with the UMC\u2019s University Senate announcing on Thursday that Asbury, based in Wilmore, Kentucky, and Northeastern Seminary in Rochester, New York, were being removed from its \u201clist of approved non-United Methodist schools.\u201d<\/p>\n

The ban does not apply to current enrollees or to those beginning classes in Fall 2026, but, as Christianity Today<\/em> reports, only 9% of current Asbury students identify as United Methodist.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Senate\u2019s requirements, particularly those related to the UMC\u2019s 2024 Social Principles concerning \u2018Human Sexuality\u2019 and \u2018Marriage,\u2019 are not aligned with Asbury Theological Seminary\u2019s institutional ethos and the historic witness of the Christian faith,\u201d Asbury President David Watson said in a prepared statement. \u201cWe affirm marriage as sanctioned by God, which joins one man and one woman in a single, exclusive union for life, as delineated in Scripture, and provides the sole context for sexual intimacy, helping to ensure the blessings of that relationship as God intended.\u201d<\/p>\n

Asbury will continue as an affiliate of the conservative Global Methodist Church.<\/p>\n
