What mattered was that it had been asked.

Read more The DSA Takes Over The Democrat Party

This pattern is no longer unusual. It is the point.

Across western societies, moral judgment is becoming faster, more public, and less tethered to anything that looks like a stable standard. Entire categories of “sin” now emerge, spread, and harden in real time, often before anyone has had the chance to examine them. These are not inherited moral laws, nor are they the product of careful democratic deliberation. They are manufactured, enforced, and revised by the crowd itself.

This is not chaos. It is a system. And it is older than it looks.

In The Republic, Plato described the “Noble Lie”: a myth told by rulers to preserve order, a story everyone was meant to believe, even if it was not strictly true. What he did not anticipate was a world in which no one admits the lie exists, and no ruler is clearly visible. The population becomes both audience and enforcer, sustaining the story not because it has been imposed, but because it feels like truth.

The French Revolution offers a more recognizable version. Under Maximilien Robespierre, virtue itself became a political instrument. The category expanded and contracted as needed, and those who fell outside it were not debated but eliminated. What looked like moral purification was, in practice, a system of control sustained by public participation. The guillotine was only its most visible feature.

Today, the mechanism runs without the need for spectacle. Social media has replaced the square. The crowd no longer gathers physically; it assembles instantly, anywhere, at scale. The result is a form of moral enforcement that is both more diffuse and more efficient than anything Robespierre could have imagined.

The process is simple. A claim is made about what constitutes a moral failure. The claim spreads rapidly, carried by outrage and affirmation. A target is identified. Labels are applied. The substance of the original question becomes irrelevant. What matters is alignment. Those who hesitate risk becoming the next example.

The striking feature of this system is not its intensity, but its fluidity. The sins change constantly. What is condemned this month may be ignored the next. There is no stable canon, no enduring authority, no shared framework capable of resisting the pressure of the moment. And yet enforcement grows stricter, not looser.

This is what makes the system effective. It does not rely on agreement. It relies on participation.

It is also not confined to one side of politics.

On the Left, moral enforcement tends to organize itself around identity, language, and historical responsibility. To question the outcomes of a policy framed as advancing equity is not treated as a disagreement about evidence. It is treated as a revelation of character. The critic is not answered but categorized, often in terms that make further engagement unnecessary. The label does the work the argument would otherwise have to do.

On the Right, the structure is different in content but identical in form. Here, the boundaries are drawn around loyalty, tradition, and perceived civilizational threat. To question certain foreign policy commitments, or to complicate a dominant narrative, is to risk immediate suspicion. Again, the argument is secondary. What matters is whether the speaker can be placed inside or outside the moral community.

Read more ‘A Few Men Well Conducted’

Both sides believe they are defending truth. Both, in practice, are enforcing conformity.

This symmetry is uncomfortable, and for that reason often denied. But it points to something more fundamental than partisan failure. The mechanism does not belong to any ideology. It belongs to human beings. Give any group sufficient cultural momentum, and it will begin to define virtue in ways that protect itself, then punish those who refuse to perform it.

What has changed is not the instinct, but the infrastructure.

Digital networks have removed the friction that once slowed moral judgment. Reputational consequences can now be delivered instantly and at scale. Institutions, faced with this pressure, often choose to absorb and reflect it rather than resist it. The result is a feedback loop: the crowd signals outrage, institutions validate it, and the boundaries of acceptable thought narrow further.

This is not a uniquely American phenomenon. In Britain, academics report increasing self-censorship on politically sensitive topics, not because they are formally prohibited, but because the professional risks are obvious. In parts of Europe, legal frameworks have begun to formalize what was once informal, extending the reach of moral enforcement into law. The content varies by country. The structure does not.

Authoritarian states have simply made the system explicit. In China, social credit mechanisms tie behavior to tangible rewards and penalties, embedding moral judgment directly into governance. The West tends to view this as alien. In reality, it differs less in kind than in degree. What is enforced informally through culture there is enforced administratively here. The outcome, in both cases, is a population that learns to regulate itself.

The deeper problem is not the existence of moral judgment. Every society requires it. The problem is the absence of any authority beyond the crowd itself. When moral standards are generated, enforced, and revised entirely within the same system, they become untethered from anything stable. They must constantly be renewed, expanded, and defended. New sins must be identified. New violations must be punished. The process does not end because it cannot end.

This produces a peculiar kind of society: one that feels both intensely moral and deeply arbitrary. Judgment is swift and absolute, but rarely consistent. Accountability is demanded, but seldom applied evenly. Individuals learn not to reason about moral questions, but to anticipate them.

Alexis de Tocqueville warned that democratic societies risk a form of tyranny distinct from older, more visible kinds. It would not announce itself through force, but through consensus. The individual would remain formally free, but would find dissent increasingly difficult to sustain. The pressure would come not from the state alone, but from the social body itself.

Read more Fascinating insights about life in China

That description now feels less like a warning than a diagnosis.

A few months ago, a professor at a British university raised a narrow, empirical question about the effectiveness of a diversity initiative.
