Every year, as summer heats up, I find myself gently correcting friends and family.\u00a0\u00a0Plans fly back and forth: \u201cWhat are you doing for the Fourth?\u201d\u00a0\u00a0\u201cHoping for good weather on the Fourth!\u201d\u00a0\u00a0It\u2019s a small thing, but it irritates me.<\/p>

This year is worse than ever.\u00a0\u00a0I honestly cannot recall hearing anyone in the last few weeks referring to it as Independence Day.\u00a0\u00a0There have been many ads on television, radio, the internet, and in the newspaper referring to the upcoming holiday, and I haven\u2019t seen one of them referring to it by name.<\/p>\n

We don\u2019t wish people a \u201cMerry December 25th\u201d or a \u201cHappy January 1st.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0Yet this holiday, and only this one holiday, is routinely reduced to its calendar date.\u00a0\u00a0That habit matters more than it seems, because it risks dimming the very reason we celebrate.<\/p>\n

The Declaration of Independence, drafted primarily by Thomas Jefferson and formally adopted by the Continental Congress on July 4, 1776, was an audacious act.\u00a0\u00a0Thirteen colonies declared themselves free from the most powerful empire on Earth.\u00a0\u00a0They staked everything on the radical idea that governments derive their just powers from the consent of the governed, and that all men are endowed by their Creator with unalienable rights to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.<\/p>\n

Calling the anniversary\u00a0Independence Day\u00a0keeps that revolutionary spirit front and center.\u00a0\u00a0It honors the courage of the Founders and the countless men and women who risked (and often lost) their lives, fortunes, and sacred honor to make those words real.\u00a0\u00a0It reminds us that the United States was not handed down by accident, but deliberately founded on timeless principles of liberty and self-government.<\/p>\n

By contrast, \u201cthe Fourth of July\u201d sounds like just another date on the calendar \u2014 pleasant but weightless.\u00a0\u00a0It easily slides into a generic summer holiday of barbecues, fireworks, and long weekends.\u00a0\u00a0Those traditions are wonderful, but without the deeper context, the celebration can drift away from its roots in defiance, sacrifice, and the birth of a sovereign nation.<\/p>

Independence Day\u00a0also connects us to a broader human story.\u00a0\u00a0Countries around the world proudly mark their own independence days \u2014 India on August 15, Mexico on September 16, Nigeria on October 1, and many others.\u00a0\u00a0The phrase signals liberation from colonial rule or tyranny and affirms the universal yearning for self-determination.\u00a0\u00a0When Americans use the same language, we both highlight our own unique founding and stand in solidarity with that global aspiration for freedom.<\/p>\n

Today, far too many of our county\u2019s foundational ideas feel contested or taken for granted.\u00a0\u00a0Recently, we\u2019ve seen freshman politicians boasting about wiping their dirty hands on the American flag, openly denigrating America, and even supporting Muslim terrorists.<\/p>\n

In light of that, reclaiming \u201cIndependence Day\u201d is powerful.\u00a0\u00a0It invites reflection: Are we still living up to the principles Jefferson articulated?\u00a0\u00a0Are we teaching the next generation what that extraordinary summer of 1776 actually meant?\u00a0\u00a0Some of us are, but far too many of us are not.\u00a0\u00a0The name itself calls us to remember, to recommit, and to pass the legacy forward.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Fourth\u201d feels static and forgettable.\u00a0\u00a0Independence Day\u00a0pulses with meaning.\u00a0\u00a0It keeps the holiday anchored in history, ideals, and purpose.<\/p>\n

Moving forward, let\u2019s make the small but meaningful shift.\u00a0\u00a0Say it, celebrate it, and teach it as\u00a0Independence Day.\u00a0\u00a0Gently remind others of the real name of this holiday.\u00a0\u00a0In doing so, we honor the courage that gave us this country and help ensure its spirit endures.<\/p>
