If you found yourself channel surfing in Gaza between 2007 and 2009, you may have happened upon “Tomorrow\u2019s Pioneers.” The children\u2019s show, which aired for four seasons on the Al-Aqsa television network, features a young hijab-adorned Palestinian girl named Saraa accompanied by a costumed animal. Skits are used to educate the audience about the importance of fighting for Palestinian statehood. Season 1 stars Farfour, a mouse with a high-pitched voice and a casual antisemitism that would make Joseph Goebbels blush. In the final episode, after being entrusted with the key to his ancestral lands by his dying grandfather, Farfour laments, \u201cbut I don\u2019t know how to liberate this land from the filth of the criminal, plundering Jews.\u201d The show ends with the mouse being beaten to death by IDF soldiers. This crude plot device is recycled in each subsequent season, with viewers being introduced to a new costumed animal whose \u201cdeath by Jew\u201d in the final episode is a foregone conclusion.\u00a0<\/p>

Sixteen years later, on October 7th, 2023, thousands of Hamas fighters and Palestinian civilians, many of whom had sat on their living room floors as children and watched a cartoon mouse get murdered, crossed into Israel seeking vengeance.<\/p>\n

What followed was the bloodiest day for Jews since the Holocaust. Entire families were slaughtered in their homes. Young people attending a music festival were hunted down, tortured, and executed. Hundreds of innocent civilians, including infants and the elderly, were dragged back into the dungeons of Gaza to be held as hostages.\u00a0<\/p>\n

One might have expected such an atrocity to produce a moment of moral clarity. Instead, many activists, academics, and intellectuals in the West immediately set about the task of whitewashing it. The attack was framed as inevitable blowback from years of occupation. (Overlooking the fact that Gaza had not been occupied since 2005.)\u00a0The perpetrators were resistance fighters and the victims became disposable pawns in a larger narrative about colonialism.<\/p>\n

But to offer up excuses for Hamas is to provide them with a moral justification they never requested. Unlike their apologists in the West, they have never felt the need to cleanse their crimes in the language of social justice. Whether they are free or under occupation, they are proud of October 7th and have vowed to carry it out again and again.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The tendency to portray October 7 as simply a desperate response to occupation ignores another inconvenient reality: the majority of Islamist terrorism has nothing to do with Israel. The men who murdered concertgoers at the Bataclan Theatre in Paris and at the Manchester Arena were not living under occupation. The terrorists who carried out the Bali bombings and the Mumbai attack were never forced to endure the indignities of checkpoints and a naval blockade. The common thread linking these atrocities is not Israeli policy but an ideology that glorifies martyrdom and places little value on non-Muslim lives.<\/p>\n

\"Israel<\/figure>\nWhen Israel invaded and began a decisive campaign of retribution, her enemies countered by accusing the IDF of engaging in a \u201cgenocide\u201d. Although 75,000 deaths out of a population of 2 million is a tragedy, it can hardly be characterized as a genocide. The Armenian Genocide and the Holocaust claimed 1.5 million and 6 million lives respectively. In Rwanda, nearly 800,000 Tutsis were slaughtered in under four months. Are we really to believe that an African militia armed with machetes was capable of out-killing the most technologically advanced militaries in history?\u00a0<\/p>\n

The irony is that the side accused of genocidal ambitions in this conflict is not the one whose leaders routinely speak in exterminationist terms. One shudders to think what Hamas would do if they possessed the same firepower as the IDF. They would remind the world in short order what an actual genocide looks like.<\/p>\n

The creation of Israel provided a sanctuary for refugees fleeing antisemitism, but it did nothing to address the underlying forces that had necessitated her creation in the first place. The animosity that had previously been directed toward Jews would now play out on a much larger scale, with the fledgling country serving as a proxy for the besieged Jewish ghetto and the wider Middle East standing in for any number of European countries from which Jews had been forced to flee. After centuries in exile, the quest for a homeland had ended, but the battle to defend it had just begun.<\/p>\n

When Israel was founded, the bulk of the left were squarely behind her because Jews were seen as the perennial victims of xenophobia and oppression. Yet something unexpected happened in the intervening decades. Not only did Israel survive against all odds, she prospered. The stereotype of the helpless Jewish refugee gradually gave way to the image of the brave IDF soldier.<\/p>

But nobody roots for Goliath.<\/p>\n

Many progressives began to see Israel as the oppressor and the Palestinians as the ones deserving sympathy and support.<\/p>\n

This shift in perception obscured another uncomfortable truth. Time and again, Palestinian leaders were presented with opportunities to pursue statehood and chose confrontation instead. The pattern stretches from the Grand Mufti of Jerusalem, who allied himself with Nazi Germany, to the PLO, to Hamas.<\/p>\n

The most striking example occurred at Camp David in 2000. After decades of terrorism, Yasser Arafat found himself within reach of what generations of Palestinian leaders had claimed to desire — a state of their own. Yet he walked away.<\/p>\n

The collapse of Camp David exposed something many observers had long suspected: that Palestinian statehood was a little more than a subterfuge for the greater goal of eliminating Israel.<\/p>\n

But Arafat was hardly alone. Aligning oneself with the Palestinian struggle has become something of a cottage industry on the progressive left. Noam Chomsky achieved greater fame from his opposition to Israel than through his work as a linguist. Similarly, Edward Said was a professor of comparative literature who toiled in obscurity until he burst onto the scene as an advocate for a free Palestine.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Joining the struggle worked out spectacularly well for both these men, but it was an unmitigated disaster for the Palestinians. Some of the worst counsel given, like insisting on the right of return and holding out for a better deal, came courtesy of ivory tower intellectuals who would never personally bear the consequences of the conflict they romanticized.<\/p>\n

This brings us to the slogan \u201cQueers for Palestine.\u201d<\/p>\n

Imagine being gay and advocating for the creation of a country that, if you had the misfortune of living there, would immediately place you at risk of being unceremoniously thrown from a tall building. One struggles to conjure up a more self-extinguishing declaration. \u201cJews for Hitler\u201d comes to mind, or perhaps \u201cChickens for Colonel Sanders.\u201d To be a postmodern virtue signaler is to hold your own civilization up to an impossible standard while simultaneously having no standards whatsoever for those who are allied against it.<\/p>\n

Why is the vile indoctrination that was on full display in Tomorrow\u2019s Pioneers more consequential than the garden-variety anti-Semitism that has become a fixture in many parts of the Arab world? Because the Palestinians are governed by leaders who do not view anti-Semitism as merely a guilty pleasure or a convenient distraction, but rather as a natural resource to be carefully cultivated and weaponized.<\/p>\n
