I have been a strong supporter of Donald Trump, ever since he started running for the 2016 nomination. In ranking U.S. presidents, a strong case can be made for Trump ranking number two, George Washington will always be number one. But, regretfully, Trump has lost the war in Iran. The Islamist regime in Iran is stronger than ever, will have tens of billions of dollars filling its coffers, and can now boast of defeating Israel and the United States.<\/p>

The spokesman for the Islamic Republic\u2019s Foreign Ministry, Esmaeil Baghaei, claimed victory, stating, \u201cIran has defeated two nuclear powers\u2026 we are truly a superpower.\u201d<\/p>\n

For once Iran is not lying or exaggerating.\u00a0 It has emerged thanks to its unexpected victory as the dominant Middle Eastern power.<\/p>\n

A few days ago I was holding out hope that President Trump had some sort of calculation behind his apparent change of attitude that I was not aware of. That it was a strategy on his part. However when using voice dictation to write this it came out \u201cit was a tragedy,\u201d and I think that describes the situation. It seems quite appropriate to use the word tragedy to describe how unexpectedly Trump turned victory in the Iran war into a humiliating defeat.<\/p>\n

Israel Had No Say or Choice<\/strong><\/p>\n

President Trump had made it clear that Israel \u201cwon\u2019t have any choice\u201d\u00a0 but to accept any treaty he signs with Iran. \u201c I call the shots. I call all the shots. He [Netanyahu] doesn\u2019t call the shots\u2026.\u201d We knew Israel would be forced to accept a treaty it does not like. I doubt Israel believed even before the treaty that regime change in Iran is a realistic possibility. I doubt that Israel believed that permanently preventing Iran from getting a nuclear bomb is a realistic option. Israel\u2019s goal was to prevent Iran from having the bomb for, say a decade, and worry about things then. But it is clear now that even that much was not Trump\u2019s goal.<\/p>\n

What Was Trump\u2019s Reasoning?<\/strong><\/p>\n

What is responsible for Trump abandoning the war in Iran? I believe there was some combination of two things at work. He was probably advised that the war was not winnable and prolonging it would only lead to ever increasing gas prices and an ever dropping chance of Republicans holding on to the Senate or House in the midterms. The ayatollahs of Iran are willing to fight right down to the last living Iranian. Not only does human life have no value to them, in that part of the world the only purpose of life is to kill and die for Islam. So apparently, the only important thing to the Trump administration now was keeping the Strait of Hormuz open, and if that means giving Iran a nuclear bomb, so be it. The equation may be no nuclear bomb equals no passable straight.<\/p>\n

I also believe Trump is under the impression that a peace treaty with Iran, any sort of treaty, would solidify his standing as a great peacemaker. Trump still thinks he can bring all the people who despise him onto his side. The logic, albeit twisted logic, being that the people on his side are already on his side. And no longer need to be appealed to. The task as he probably sees it is to get the people despising him to praise him.<\/p>\n

The Reaction<\/strong><\/p>\n

Lest I was too pessimistic in my initial reaction to the MOU, an online search demonstrates conclusively that just about every pro-Israeli source is absolutely appalled by this agreement.<\/p>\n

Netanyahu can not dare criticize Trump in public.\u00a0 But other conservative voices in Israel are free to say that Trump has ruined his legacy and Netanyahu\u2019s legacy in the bargain. Right about now there are a lot of Hebrew obscenities being shouted.<\/p>\n

People will still say correctly that Trump is better than the Islamo-Marxist party. But some people who defended and championed Trump will never do so again. And you know what Netanyahu thinks of Trump in private\u2014it is exactly what Trump said about him in public.<\/p>
