It was one of those brisk autumn mornings that make you wish you could stay in bed and soak up some more Zs.\u00a0\u00a0My partner and I had just picked up a couple of containers of coffee and were heading toward a street in Queens Village to work surveillance on a suspected drug supply house.<\/p>

Before we had our second sip of the ebony-colored stimulant, a cry for help interrupted the serenity.\u00a0\u00a0We tossed the steaming liquid out the window (a common occurrence in police work), and I hit the gas, reaching the next corner in a matter of seconds.\u00a0\u00a0As I turned the unmarked unit onto the cross street, we were shocked (not a common occurrence in police work) to see a naked woman in her late twenties running along the street and screaming for help.<\/p>\n

As we jumped out of the car to approach her, she ran toward us and grabbed my partner in a bear hug.\u00a0\u00a0\u201cAre you the police?\u201d she cried hysterically.<\/p>\n

\u201cYes, ma\u2019am,\u201d my partner replied, taking her by the shoulders and holding her at arms\u2019 length as both of us tried to adjust to the incongruity of the situation.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat happened?\u201d I asked, wishing I had a jacket or something to cover her while we inquired.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cMy husband!\u201d she screamed.\u00a0\u00a0\u201cHe\u2019s killing him!\u00a0\u00a0Please help him!\u201d<\/p>\n

We put her in the rear seat of the sedan and drove about two blocks to the house she had just run from.\u00a0\u00a0It was difficult to understand exactly what we were about to face, because she continued to murmur incoherently.\u00a0\u00a0When we pulled up to the location, she refused to leave the car.<\/p>\n

\u201cNo!\u201d she yelled.\u00a0\u00a0\u201cI\u2019m not goin\u2019 back in there.\u00a0\u00a0He\u2019s gone crazy…he\u2019s killing him.\u201d<\/p>\n

We ran to the entrance to the one-story home, and, noticing the door was wide open, drew our weapons and took positions on each side.\u00a0\u00a0We could hear the faint voice of a man pleading with someone.<\/p>\n

\u201cDon\u2019t kill me, please,\u201d the man was repeating between the anguished sounds of inflicted pain.<\/p>\n

Moving toward the voice, we made our way into the kitchen, where we came upon a man with a large bloody knife, standing over a naked man on his knees.\u00a0\u00a0There were splashes of red liquid dotting the surrounding area, and the victim had several open wounds from his face to his midsection.\u00a0\u00a0His hands were crisscrossed with slash marks as he tried to ward off more thrusts from his attacker.\u00a0\u00a0With each stabbing attempt, he would grab the blade, only to have his tormenter pull it back violently, tearing deeper into the palms and fingers.<\/p>\n

\u201cPolice!\u00a0\u00a0Drop the knife!\u201d I ordered, as we aimed our weapons at the middle of his chest.<\/p>

Seemingly unmoved by our presence, the man\u2019s rage-filled eyes moved slowly from his quivering prey to the two revolvers, only a few feet away.<\/p>\n

\u201cI caught him with my wife!\u201d he snarled, making another jab with the eight-inch carving knife.<\/p>\n

His terrified hostage sustained another wound as he tried to ward off the blow.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe was supposed to be my friend!\u201d the attacker hissed through clenched teeth.\u00a0\u00a0\u201cI caught them in my bed!\u00a0\u00a0He was coming over here when I left for work!\u201d he said, twisting his face to an ugly scowl.<\/p>\n

With each acid-laced utterance, he did a little more damage to the terrified lothario, who continued begging for his life, unwilling to turn toward us for fear of a fatal wound from his antagonist.<\/p>\n

As we grasped a situation the woman had not prepared us for, we realized that it was not a typical felonious assault by an intruder.\u00a0\u00a0The victim, although covered in blood, didn\u2019t appear to have any life-threatening wounds.\u00a0\u00a0Yet that could change in seconds if the knife-wielder wanted him dead.<\/p>\n

\u201cOkay, you punished him enough,\u201d I said, trying to cajole the outraged husband into giving it up.\u00a0\u00a0\u201cI feel sorry for what happened, but I can\u2019t let you cut him anymore,\u201d I added, cocking my weapon and moving closer.<\/p>\n

He looked down at the object of his hatred and raised the dripping dagger again.<\/p>\n

\u201cDon\u2019t!\u201d I warned, beginning to squeeze the trigger.\u00a0\u00a0\u201cIf you make me kill you, he wins.\u00a0\u00a0As a husband, I can understand how you feel, but as a cop, I swear I\u2019ll shoot you if I have to.\u201d<\/p>\n

He stared at my eyes for a few seconds before tossing the knife in the sink.\u00a0\u00a0After cuffing the slasher and putting him in the radio car, I couldn\u2019t help wondering if the woman had purposely left out some details, hoping we might shoot her husband instead of her lover.<\/p>\n

Anyway, the victim was transported to a hospital, and the attacker was arrested.\u00a0\u00a0When we put him in a holding cell in our office, the other detectives, who had been listening to the radio transmissions, asked if he was the guy who caught his friend in bed with his wife.\u00a0\u00a0When we told them he was, they broke out in a round of applause.<\/p>

\u201cWay to go, my man!\u201d one of them said.<\/p>\n

\u201cCan I get you something to drink?\u201d said another.<\/p>\n

Yeah, I know.\u00a0\u00a0Cops can be very cynical.<\/p>\n
