Housing is a keystone indicator to the health of the economy.<\/p>\n

So much pivots on the industry: landscaping, furniture purchases, retail.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0When housing starts are down, the economy is under stress.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>

There are two phenomena affecting the economy today.\u00a0\u00a0Both are the result of faulty monetary policy.\u00a0\u00a0Both negatively impact the private economy.\u00a0\u00a0Both are at cross purposes; they counteract each other, leaving the economy in limbo.\u00a0\u00a0Great uncertainty fosters paralysis and stagflation.\u00a0\u00a0Personally, I have high hopes for the new Fed chair addressing the source of our current economic malaise.<\/p>\n

Higher interest rates have a depressive effect on activity.\u00a0\u00a0The cost of borrowing increases when fed fund rates increase.\u00a0\u00a0The fed fund rate indirectly affects loan rates by driving up the bank cost of funds.\u00a0\u00a0Granted, the Federal Reserve impacts only the overnight rate, but its action or inaction\u00a0can influence the long rate.<\/p>\n

Second, excess supply of money, starting in 2008, caused severe dollar devaluation (inflation).\u00a0\u00a0Money supply (liquidity) should be stimulative; however, the massive infusion of dollars into the economy, through quantitative easing, devalued the dollar, resulting in substantial\u00a0price inflation.\u00a0\u00a0This has undermined the citizens ability to meet his regular obligations.\u00a0\u00a0So excess money supply has become depressive.<\/p>\n

The new Federal Reserve chairman is aware of these problems.\u00a0\u00a0If anyone can fix the problem, he can.\u00a0\u00a0He recognizes that inflation is not going to be fixed by strangling the economy with high interest rates.\u00a0\u00a0Further, he has stated that excess money is the problem and intends to reduce same.\u00a0\u00a0As we\u2019ve been saying for 20 years, reducing money supply is the correct answer to the problems in our economy.<\/p>

The crux of spending is that every dollar the government spends comes from the citizen.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0The big-government politicians talk about how they will fix all problems through spending, but they never once say what the source of that money is.\u00a0\u00a0Taxes and national debt, which citizens pay back, is the source of spending by our elected officials.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Reducing the money supply available for politicians to spend, by reducing dollars in circulation, will force less spending.\u00a0\u00a0Less government spending means the citizen keeps more of what he earned.\u00a0\u00a0Who is going to spend more wisely?\u00a0\u00a0The person who earned the money through hard work or the person who stole the money through taxation?<\/p>\n

Reducing money supply causes short-term pain, like an addict\u2019s withdrawal from heroin.\u00a0\u00a0It means that politicians and bureaucrats can no longer spend or go into debt.\u00a0\u00a0This single act will return liberty and freedom to the private economy.\u00a0\u00a0In other words, the citizen will get to keep more of what he earns and spend less on taxes and federal debt service.\u00a0<\/p>\n
