Here\u2019s another example of DEI that contradicts common sense.<\/p>\n

Fox Sports\u2019 coverage of the World Cup games displays a message encouraging viewers to vote for the \u201cSuperior Player of the Match,\u201d alongside a QR code. What the heck is that? This is the men\u2019s<\/em> World Cup. All the players are men<\/em>. It is obvious that the vote should be for the \u201cMan of the Match,\u201d as it has been for decades theretofore.<\/p>

In fact, it could be argued that women can\u2019t aspire to be proper soccer players \u2014 there is a lesser version. The diminutive \u201csoccerettes\u201d generally lack the skill, power, and speed to exhibit the full range of soccer talent. Does that sound harsh?\u00a0 Sorry, then, it’s just reality, presuming that still matters. Consider that a bunch of under-15 boys from an\u00a0FC Dallas Academy team\u00a0gave the U.S. Women\u2019s National Team a sound thrashing — 5-2. All youngsters, even prodigies, are still developing their array of talents at that age. No worries \u2014 the women are better at cheerleading.<\/p>\n

In one lunchtime co-ed league I played in, all the fellas (except for one geriatric interloper) took it easy on the ladies. In fact, if a male player so much as brushed up against a female opponent, he\u2019d be subject to a cascade of boos from the peanut gallery. The problem is that in humoring them, it actually went to their heads. They dared to believe they were our equals.<\/p>\n

In Fox Sports\u2019s preposterous DEI efforts to impose gender-neutral language, they\u2019ve come up with a bizarre construct. What does \u201csuperior player\u201d even mean? Maybe that describes a physically dominant defender who thwarts some attacks. However, a more skillful little whippersnapper uses his guile and trickery to score the goals that actually win the match. He may not literally be \u201csuperior,\u201d but he is the \u201cman<\/em>\u00a0of the match.\u201d<\/p>

My basketball knowledge is sketchy, but here\u2019s an analogy. It could be argued that Victor Wembanyama (nicknamed \u201cWemby\u201d), of the San Antonio Spurs, was the \u201csuperior\u201d player in Game 5 of the Championship Series against the New York Knicks. However, Jalen Brunson had much more impact, leading the Knicks to their first NBA Championship since 1973.<\/p>\n

Indeed, the physically imposing \u201cWemby\u201d did demonstrate one aspect of his \u201csuperior\u201d (as in condescending) attitude. He insisted that the\u00a0Spurs \u201cdominated\u201d the series. He concluded by saying,\u00a0\u201cSee you\u2026 never.\u201d I guess he\u2019s French, and, incongruously, they like to think they are \u201csuperior.\u201d<\/p>\n

The point being that dubbing someone the \u201csuperior player\u2019 has negative connotations that don\u2019t capture the simpler \u201cMan of the Match.\u201d Don\u2019t replace gendered language with contrived concoctions that could convey a convoluted meaning.<\/p>
