One of them is from\u00a0The Economist<\/em>\u00a0and YouGov. Among American adults, only 29 percent\u00a0approve\u00a0of President Donald J. Trump\u2019s handling of the economy, with 63 percent disapproving. This disconnect between progress on the ground and widespread dissatisfaction should trouble every Republican who cares about the pivotal November midterm elections.<\/p>\n

The economic numbers tell a story of steady improvement.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The total trade deficit in April\u00a0came\u00a0in at $55.88 billion, down from March and seven percent below the recent 12-month average. Goods deficits narrowed too. These gains did not happen by accident. Trump\u2019s bold tariff strategy was\u00a0launched\u00a0on Liberation Day\u2014April 2, 2025\u2014with a baseline 10 percent on most imports and higher rates where needed. That pushed stubborn, powerful trading partners to the table.\u00a0<\/p>\n

After the Supreme Court forced adjustments, Trump\u2019s administration used other tools to crack down on corrosive practices.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The U.S. goods trade deficit\u00a0shrank\u00a0by 24 percent in the year after Liberation Day, with better balances against most partners. Factories are returning. Supply chains are strengthening at home. New deals have opened doors for American energy, farm goods, and manufactured products. Import duties collected in April dropped below average as trade patterns shifted toward fairness, yet overall revenue supports America First priorities.<\/p>\n

This is the kind of practical leadership that puts U.S. workers first.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Tariffs\u00a0raised\u00a0the cost of dumping cheap foreign goods that once hollowed out factories and towns. Companies responded by bringing production back, pouring trillions into American manufacturing, energy, and infrastructure. Families see more opportunities in communities that were forgotten for decades.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Trump\u2019s fair trade policy\u00a0protects\u00a0key sectors like steel, autos, and semiconductors while encouraging allies to buy more from America. Mexico, Canada, and the United Kingdom remain top export destinations, but the overall flow now favors more balanced relationships. Top exports include aircraft, gold, and pharmaceuticals. This is real value created by American ingenuity.<\/p>\n

At the same time, Republicans delivered the Working Families Tax Cuts, which are part of Trump\u2019s One Big Beautiful Bill, signed last July. The results speak louder than any slogan.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Nearly 70 percent of those who received a tax cut\u00a0earn\u00a0less than $100,000 a year. Over 7.5 million workers claimed the no-tax-on-tips break, with 90 percent under $100,000. Another 29 million kept more of their overtime pay, three-quarters of them under that threshold.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Seniors got relief too: 35 million claimed the Social Security deduction, most earning under $100,000. Families claimed an expanded Child Tax Credit now at $2,200 and indexed for inflation, with 65 percent of claimants below six figures. Even the new deduction for auto loan interest on American-made vehicles helped over a million families, the majority working-class.\u00a0<\/p>\n

These are not abstract numbers. They mean a waitress keeps more of every tip, a factory dad brings home extra from long shifts, and grandmother stretches her fixed income further. Nearly 40 million families\u00a0benefited\u00a0from the bigger Child Tax Credit. Over 127 million Americans, who constitute 90 percent of filers, used the doubled standard deduction.<\/p>\n

Despite these tangible wins, public perception lags badly.\u00a0<\/p>\n

A recent Marquette University survey shows Democrats now\u00a0hold\u00a0a narrow lead over Republicans on who voters trust more with the economy: 35 percent to 32 percent. On inflation and cost of living, the gap widens to seven points. Only 30 percent approve of Trump\u2019s economic management in that poll.\u00a0<\/p>

Many Americans still feel squeezed by higher prices carried over from the hideous Biden-Harris years, when 21-percent cumulative inflation\u00a0crushed\u00a0household budgets. Gas prices spiked again recently, due to the unavoidable yet unpopular Iran conflict, though experts expect them to ease. The Biden-Harris economic pain lingers, yet its blue origin is rapidly becoming obscured.\u00a0<\/p>\n

This gap between reality and voter sentiment is more than frustrating. It is dangerous. The economy is far from perfect. Severe headwinds remain. Yet the improvements are measurable and growing. Trade deficits are tightening. Inflation is cooling dramatically from Biden-Harris-era peaks. Working families are keeping more of what they earn.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The failure lies in messaging.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Republicans have shamefully failed to promote their successes. That silence handed Democrats an opening to shamelessly rewrite history, claiming they would do better despite presiding over the very cost-of-living crisis that hurt untold millions. Most voters are justifiably frustrated with the persistently inflated economy. However, they miss the context of how Trump\u2019s team tackled the worst Biden-Harris problems and laid groundwork for resilient growth.<\/p>\n

The stakes go beyond today\u2019s headlines.\u00a0<\/p>\n

America\u00a0faces\u00a0serious long-term choices on debt. The debt-to-gross domestic product ratio sits near 100 percent and heads toward 130 percent in a decade if nothing changes. Every year of delay raises risks of a painful spiral if interest rates soar or a financial crisis hits. Stabilizing the trajectory demands action now on healthcare costs, especially Medicare, smarter international tax rules, and immigration focused on high-skilled talent who contribute and innovate.\u00a0<\/p>\n

If America\u2019s debt spirals, that harms normal Americans through anemic economic growth, as private investment would be choked off by surging interest rates. Higher taxes and reduced government services would be certain. Uncle Sam would have diminished fiscal flexibility for any number of crises. Catastrophic damage to U.S. economic stability and global standing would transpire, eroding wages, opportunities, and prosperity.<\/p>\n

This goes to show just how important it is for Republicans to have a solid, workable, perpetual public affairs machine. To say that it lacks any such thing is being overly charitable. The GOP has failed hideously in communicating its success stories. With such a pathetic track record, how would it be able to convince a skeptical public to support tough maneuvers that prevent an indescribably tougher debt spiral?<\/p>\n

Republicans own a strong record in President Trump\u2019s second term. There is lower inflation, fairer trade, and direct relief for working Americans. Yet the GOP\u2019s public relations effort has proven deplorable. Without clear, consistent explanations of red wins, frustration festers, and blue opportunists fill the void with knowing and willful lies. Their cynicism, rooted in a fanatical yearning for raw power and an indescribable disdain for the average voter\u2019s intelligence, knows no bounds.<\/p>\n

This moment calls for urgency.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Republicans must sharpen their voice, celebrate real progress without apology, and encourage reachable voters to make responsible decisions in this midterm season. The goal is not only securing prosperity for the near term, but preventing America from becoming a third-world cesspit of bankrupt institutions, ideas, and people.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Americans deserve to know the facts: things are moving in the right direction after years of Biden-Harris mayhem. Staying the course with GOP leadership will deliver even better results, though an easy road to greatness has never been paved, nor shall it ever be.<\/p>\n
