the Six-Day War and its aftermath"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p>On June 5, 1967, 59 years ago, the Six-Day War began.\u00a0\u00a0By noontime, our base commander assembled the crew members at our Tel Nof Airbase to announce that the Arab air forces had been destroyed.\u00a0\u00a0It was one of those moments you never forget.\u00a0\u00a0We, the ground crew, joyously threw our blue berets in the air, embraced one another, and felt an enormous sense of relief.\u00a0\u00a0Although it was only the first day of the war, we understood that if we dominated the sky and could support our ground continued preparing our planes for dozens of sorties.\u00a0\u00a0It would be 24\/7 for almost two months.\u00a0\u00a0Sleep during the war was limited to short naps, and there were no passes to go home.\u00a0\u00a0Surprisingly, no one complained.\u00a0\u00a0The commitment was 100 percent.<\/p>\n<p>Two days later, on June 7, 1967, we celebrated once again.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0It was a day we thought might not come in our lifetime \u2014 the liberation of the Old City of Jerusalem.\u00a0\u00a0The Western Wall of our ancient Temple, Judaism\u2019s holiest site that was barred to us for 19 years, was now <em>b\u2019yadeynu<\/em> \u2014 \u201cin our hands\u201d!<\/p>\n<p>The Jordanian Arab Legion, led by a British officer, John Bagot Glubb, nicknamed Glubb Pasha, was the most effective Arab foe young Israel faced in the 1948 War of Independence.\u00a0\u00a0The Irgun forces, who fought for the Old City, could not match the heavy equipment and the far more numerous and well trained troops the Legion fielded.\u00a0\u00a0And so the Old City tragically fell into their hands.\u00a0\u00a0We could see the Old City from afar but could not touch its walls or climb David\u2019s Tower.<\/p>\n<p>One can only imagine the excitement and joy we young soldiers experienced when, just one week after the war ended, our squadron boarded military trucks and headed for Jerusalem and the Old City.\u00a0\u00a0Parents and spouses were invited to join us.\u00a0\u00a0Upon reaching the Temple Mount and the Western Wall, we were shocked by the level of neglect, destruction and desecration committed by the Jordanians.\u00a0\u00a0The Legion had desecrated much of the Old City, including the Jewish Quarter; destroyed all but one of the 35 old synagogues, plundered Torah scrolls; and used Jewish graves on the Mount of Olives for latrines.\u00a0\u00a0Garbage was everywhere.\u00a0\u00a0The ways in which this holy place was treated should have been condemned worldwide.<\/p>\n<p>From Jerusalem we headed south to the ancient city of Hebron and the Machpelah Cave, where Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Sarah, Leah, and Rebecca are buried.\u00a0\u00a0Since the Arab Muslims also honor our forefathers, the place was in somewhat better shape than the Kotel (Western Wall).\u00a0\u00a0From there we headed to Bethlehem, King David\u2019s birthplace, stopping along the way at Rachel\u2019s Tomb, and the Church of the Nativity.<\/p>\n<p>Throughout our travels, the Arab residents we encountered looked at us with fear and foreboding.\u00a0\u00a0We were armed with Uzi submachine guns, and they, no doubt, seemed to expect us to do to them what they would have done to us had they been victorious.<\/p>\n<p>Young people today take these holy sites for granted.\u00a0\u00a0For our generation, however, these religious and historical sites were wonders we had mourned losing in 1948 and prayed to one day repossess.<\/p><p>Read more <a Israeli youth.\u00a0\u00a0These past two and a half years of war since the October 7, 2023 massacre of 1,200 Israelis by Hamas and Palestinian Islamic Jihad terrorists has shifted the focus of the Israeli nation on current realities.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Not only did the nation suffer a major trauma as a result of the massacres and the suffering of the hostages, but some Israelis are also suffering from a sense of insecurity and wondering how Israel\u2019s illustrious domestic intelligence establishment was so miserably caught off guard.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Since October 7, 2023, the IDF and the Mossad (Israel\u2019s foreign intelligence service) have performed wonders against Hezb\u2019allah and the Iranian regime \u2014 masterpieces of achievements based on superb intel and the skills of the Israeli Air Force.\u00a0\u00a0The Netanyahu government abandoned containment of its enemies and instead aggressively pursued them \u2014 ultimately controlling the airspace over Iran and Lebanon and even reaching Yemen.\u00a0\u00a0Israel effectively re-established deterrence and became a regional power.<\/p>\n<p>What distinguishes the wars since 2023 from the Six-Day War is that the home front was attacked with barrages of missiles and drones coming from Iran, Hezb\u2019allah, and the Houthis.\u00a0\u00a0During the Six-Day War, the home front was not attacked.\u00a0\u00a0True, Jordanian army artillery fire hit our air base, but it caused little damage.\u00a0\u00a0There were virtually no civilian casualties.\u00a0\u00a0The national morale was likewise different.\u00a0\u00a0In June 1967, it was high, and the nation was in the grip of ecstasy and unity.\u00a0\u00a0We fought alone, with no help from outside powers, and when the war concluded, Israel was admired throughout the world.\u00a0\u00a0The little David had smashed the Arab Goliath.<\/p>\n<p>Since then, roles have been reversed.\u00a0\u00a0Israel is being perceived by many around the world as the putative Goliath while the Palestinian terrorists are seen as the presumed David.\u00a0\u00a0Apparently, the world prefers to see us as victims rather than victors.<\/p>\n<p>I will never forget an encounter with Maureen O\u2019Hara, the Irish-American actress who visited our airbase.\u00a0\u00a0I was designated to give her a tour because my English was passable.\u00a0\u00a0Casually, but rather admiringly, she said to me, \u201cI didn\u2019t know that Jews knew how to fight!\u201d\u00a0\u00a0This was how Israel was perceived at that time.\u00a0\u00a0Now, regrettably, we are often accused of \u201cwarmongering.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Despite the role reversal, I would rather be perceived as aggressors and saber-rattlers than victims and weak.<\/p><p>Read more <a
